Valera Strache was born in Ixonia on March 28, 1909, daughter of Edward and Berndena (Oestreich) Strache.

She lived in Milwaukee for four years when employed as a maid by Chester Wanwig, then president of Globe Milling.

Valera married Erwin E. Krueger at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ixonia on Sept. 6, 1936, and resided in Watertown since then. They built a home at 212 Dewey Avenue and resided there 55 years. While Erwin served in the Army during World War II, Valera worked as a seamstress for the former Elliott’s Dress Shop in Watertown. They were married 56 years until his death on March 31, 1993. They had no children but Valera treated her nieces and nephews as her own.

She was a member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown.

Valera loved crocheting afghans for many relatives, friends and nursing homes. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, baking and had a green thumb growing beautiful roses and African violets.

Surviving are her nieces and nephews, Kathleen Ebert, Robert and Phylis Krueger, Patsy and Herman Zastrow, Dennis and Geri Buske, Sandra and Dan Rullman, Steven Buske, Juanita Shepherd, Carol Strache, Ramona Decker, Connie Manske, Sharon Peterson and other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Wilbert Strache, Omar Strache, Edward Strache; two sisters, Sylvia Buske and Lenora Goodnight.

Valera was the last member of her immediate family.

The family would like to thank Anne and residents at Loppnow Apartments for their friendship, Sherri and her staff at Zinzendorf Assisted Living for their loving care, hospice nurse, Jayne for her tender loving care and Barb at Marquardt Health Center for all her assistance. Also, to Dr. Holden and his staff for their kindness, and the second floor nurses and doctors at Watertown Regional Medical Center for their wonderful care. The family deeply appreciates all of you.
