Arnold K. Schumann, 84, of Watertown, formerly of Jefferson, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 14, 2016.
He was born on Oct. 6, 1931, the son of William and Adela (Remmel) Schumann, in Watertown. He married the former Catherine M. Hrobsky on June 21, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas, and he and his wife celebrated 63 years together on their last anniversary. His wife survives, as do three children: James (Mary) Schumann of Oshkosh, Margaret (Mike) Wendland of Bullhead City, Ariz., and David (Chris) Schumann of Janesville. Six grandchildren also survive: Jason (Kristin) Wendland of Jersey City, N.J., Michael Wendland of Los Angeles, Calif., Jamie (Jon) Lemerond of Madison, Daniel Schumann of Middleton and Katie and Austin Schumann of Janesville; and great-grandchildren Alex and Chloe Wendland of Jersey City. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.
Schumann attended St. Mark’s School, the former Northwestern Preparatory School, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin Law School. He joined the law firm of Niemann and Hibbard in 1966 and practiced with that firm and its successors until 1982 when he was appointed Jefferson County circuit judge by former Gov. Lee Sherman Dreyfus. He was elected in 1983 and 1989. He served as a circuit judge until his retirement in 1995. Following his retirement, he was active as a reserve judge, serving in various circuit courts in the 3rd Judicial District and elsewhere, and as a mediator. He was the reserve judge member of the Judicial Conduct Advisory Committee of the state of Wisconsin for six years after his retirement.
Schumann was active in a number of local organizations. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown whenever he lived in Wisconsin, serving as the president of the congregation for six years. He was a member of the Northwestern College Board of Control for nearly three decades when that institution was located in Watertown. He served on the board of directors of the M&I Bank of Watertown until he was appointed to the bench. He was a past president of the Watertown Rotary Club. He served on the Heritage Homes board of directors. He was a member of the Wethonkitha Club and other social clubs. He was a member of the Watertown Country Club for over 30 years. He was also active in sports, playing softball, basketball, golf and racquetball for many years. He served in the U.S. Army in France during the Korean Conflict, receiving an honorable discharge in 1954.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Brett Brauer officiating. Relatives and friends may gather at the funeral home on Saturday from 4-6 p.m. and at the church on Sunday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial with military honors will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown. A reception for family and friends will follow services in the lower level of the church.
The family expresses its gratitude to Judge Schumann’s pastors, doctors and caregivers for their gracious services preceding his death.
Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Trust Fund of that church.
