Schuhmacher, Elmer C., b. Dec 9, 1919, d. Aug 16, 1944

14 Sep 1944  Oconomowoc Enterprise

Sergeant Elmer G. Schuhmacher, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Schuhmacher of R1, Ixonia, has been killed in action in Southern France.  News of his death was received this week by his parents from the War Department.

Cited some time ago for gallantry by the War Department for re-establishing a communication line between an observation post and the artillery with utter disregard for his own safety, Sgt Schuhmacher was a veteran of the war in North Africa and Italy.  He entered the service 1 March 1942 and a year later left for duty over seas.  During that short time he distinguished himself as a soldier.

Sgt Schuhmacher was a graduate of the Watertown High School and was a junior at the state teachers college at Whitewater when he entered service.

In addition to his parents, he has a younger brother, Carl, a sophomore at Watertown HS and two sisters, Mrs. Edward Weiss of Valentine, Nebraska and Mrs. John Zerjav, of R1, Ixonia.

Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
