Robert J. “Bob” Saunders Jr.
1937- 2018
Robert J. “Bob” Saunders Jr., 81, a former Watertown businessman and owner of Saunders Furniture Mart, passed away quietly in his daughter’s home on Monday, July 23, 2018. Bob was diagnosed with leukemia on June 2 and chose to live out his last weeks in Watertown visiting with friends and family.
Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elsie, of The Villages, Florida; his children Barbara (Derrick) Bauer of Watertown, Scott (Lory) Saunders of Bartlett, Illinois, and Carol Saunders of Watertown; his grandchildren Ashley Richter, Melanie Saunders and Zachery Saunders; sister-in-law Myrtle Stauche; three nephews, numerous cousins and friends.
Bob was born on April 10, 1937, and grew up in Waukegan, Illinois, where he developed his love of golf and bowling. He started caddying at age 10 and many of his stories are reminiscent of his caddying experiences. The highlight of his golf career was shooting a hole-in-one, not once, but twice, both at the Watertown Country Club. Bob was an avid Chicago sports fan. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears, which he received from his mother and passed on to his son and grandchildren.
A celebration of Bob’s life will take place at Hafemeister Funeral Home on Saturday at 4 p.m. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Shriners Hospitals for Children for patients with cleft lip and palate care or the Alzheimer’s Association.
