Luana (Luanna) Richards
1856 - 1938
The death of Mrs. Luana (Luanna) Richards, 82,
member of one of Watertown's first and most widely known old families, occurred
at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, 7/26/38, at St. Mary's Hospital. Death followed a period of ill health and
infirmities of age.
She was the former Luana Bates and was born in
Farmington on 1/5/1856, a daughter of Marcelius Bates and Luana Campbell Bates. Practically her entire life was spent in
Watertown with the exception of 14 years during which
she lived in Nebraska.
She was the widow of the late Moses Richards
whose father, John Richards, built the Octagon House and who was one of the
city's first mayors. Survivors are one
daughter, Mrs. Adolph Myers, Pasco, Washington, two sons: William, Milwaukee,
and George, Watertown. There are 15
grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Richards before her marriage was a school
teacher here who served under the late Professor Theodore Bernhard (1).
Funeral at
Schmutzler Funeral Home with Rev. C. W. Pinkney of the First Congregational
Church officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill
Cemetery.
