Mrs. Elizabeth March (nee Calph) dies in
California
Word came from Los Angeles, Cal., of the
death of Mrs. Elizabeth March, (nee Calph) for many
years a resident of Watertown, which occurred June 28. She was born in Binghamton, N. Y., in Feb.
1822.
In about 1846 she came to Watertown and
resided here until twelve years ago, when she made her home in Los Angeles.
Some sixty years ago Mrs. March was left a
widow with four little girls in her care.
With firm resolve and indomitable courage she gave them a good
education, and they all became teachers in the public schools. The daughters were: Mrs. Mary Matheson, Mrs. Emma Gardner, Mrs. Zayda Allen and Mrs. Carrie Sleeper. Of these the last named survive her. She is also survived by a brother, Mr. Edward
Calph, who made his home with her and Mrs. Sleeper,
and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. March was a splendid type of Christian
womanhood and was much loved and highly respected by all who knew her.
Emma Gardner is buried in
Oak Hill Cemetery
A Peter
March [1811-1822] is buried in Oak Hill, relationship uncertain.
