Walter J. Laehr
1927- 2018
Walter J. Laehr, 91, of Watertown, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at Rainbow Hospice Inpatient Center in Johnson Creek. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Hafemeister Funeral Home in Watertown with the Rev. Ray Bezanson officiating. Relatives and friends may gather at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.
Walter John Laehr was born on July 1, 1927, to Walter and Margaret H. (nee Maerzke) Laehr in Illinois. On Aug. 26, 1950, he married Marlys Vergenz at the Reformed Church in Watertown.
Walter was a graduate of Watertown High School and then served in the United States Coast Guard. Walter was a mail carrier in Watertown for 30 years.
After his retirement from the post office he was a self-employed washer and dryer repairman. Walter was an avid fisherman.
Walter is survived by his wife, Marlys of Watertown; children, Pete (Patricia) Laehr, Vickie (Steve) Wendt and Tim (Linda) Laehr, all of Watertown; six grandchildren, Chad (Shawn) Laehr, Jodi (Mark) Budwit, Melissa (Patrick) Falk, Tracy (Greg) Peterson, Kaitlyn (Jay) Bergin and Ryan Laehr; 10 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; one niece, Laura (Ron Horner) Lockett of California; one nephew, Gordon Lockett of Virginia; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Scott Laehr; and a sister, Marjorie (Ralph) Lockett.

Marlys G. Laehr, 92, of Watertown, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Heritage Homes in Watertown.
Marlys Gertrude Vergenz was born on August 12, 1927 in Watertown, the daughter of John and Lillian (nee Ulsberger) Vergenz. She was a 1945 graduate of Watertown High School. On August 26, 1950 she married Walter J. Laehr at the Reformed Church in Watertown. Walter preceded her in death on August 11, 2018. She was a former member of the First Reformed Church. She enjoyed rummage sales and spending time with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Marlys is survived by her children: Pete (Patricia) Laehr, Vickie (Steve) Wendt, and Tim (Linda) Laehr, all of Watertown; six grandchildren: Chad (Shawn) Laehr, Jodi (Mark) Budwit, Melissa (Patrick) Falk, Tracy (Greg) Peterson, Kaitlyn (Jay) Bergin, and Ryan Laehr; ten great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends. She was further preceded in death by her parents; a son, Scott Laehr, and brother, John “Jack” Vergenz.
A private family graveside service will be held at Oak Hill cemetery in Watertown with Rev. Ray Bezanson officiating. Memorials, if desired, may be directed to Heritage Homes or Rainbow Hospice. Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Watertown is serving the family.
