Joan E. Kusel, 79, of Watertown, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Heritage Homes in Watertown.
Funeral services for Joan will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Mark Gartner and the Rev. Anthony Schultz officiating.
Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown. Memorials would be appreciated to the church.

Joan Ellen Zickert was born on Jan. 14, 1935, the daughter of Waldo and Doris (Thompson) Zickert in Watertown. She married Robbin L. Kusel on April 7, 1956, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. He preceded her in death on March 30, 2001. Joan was a graduate of Watertown High School and was employed at A&P Grocery Store, Riverview Grocery Store, Montgomery Wards, Kohls and at Riverside Middle School in the cafeteria.
She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. Joan volunteered at the Watertown Senior and Community Center, and for Meals on Wheels. She was instrumental in starting the St. Luke’s Chapter of the Lutheran Girl Pioneers. Joan loved spending time with her children and grandchildren especially at regular family barbecues. She enjoyed hot summer days, playing cards and gardening.
Joan is survived by her two daughters Wendy (James) Lichtenberg of Helenville and Linda (Cory) Ewert; a son Paul (Renee) Kusel both of Watertown; four grandchildren, Melissa (Nate) Parks, Jordan Ewert both of Watertown, Sarah Lichtenberg of Oceanside, Calif.; Megan Lichtenberg of Milwaukee, five stepgrandchildren; one great-grandson, Drake Parks; a brother, George (Joann) Zickert of Minocqua; a sister, Ellen (Wayne) Dollase of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; younger brother, Steven (Donna) Zickert of Minocqua, and other relatives and friends.
She was further preceded in death by her parents.
The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Homes and Rainbow Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Joan.
