Phoenix, AZ -- Watertown native son, Charles G. Bentzin, FSA, EA, MAAA, passed away on May 8, 2020 in Phoenix, AZ.
Charles was born on November 29, 1932 to A. E. "Mike" Bentzin and Joy Soulen Bentzin and grew up in Watertown, Wisconsin.
Charles graduated Watertown High School in 1950 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.B.A in actuarial science in 1954. Charles served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Finance Corps working on adapting military pay to the computer in the late 50's. Charles received his designation of Associate, Society of Actuaries (ASA) in 1957 and Fellow, Society of Actuaries (FSA) in 1959. His actuarial career spanned over 60 years including working in Indianapolis, IN, Hartford, CT, Phoenix, AZ and numerous foreign countries. Charles became the Chief Actuary at the State of Arizona Insurance Department; the first "lettered" actuary to hold that position and the first such professionally active actuary resident in Arizona before forming, Charles G. Bentzin Associates Inc., the Phoenix, Arizona based consulting actuarial firm.
Charles was a devoted Wisconsin football fan, a connoisseur of museums and an avid traveler, having visited over 100 countries and all seven continents. He enjoyed hiking, tennis, keeping up on college football statistics, studying maps and always learning new things. Throughout his long and fulfilling life, Charles's hometown was always kept near and dear to him. He followed Watertown developments regularly.
Charles Bentzin is survived by his sons; Ben Bentzin, Barton Bentzin; daughters Bianca Bentzin, Belinda Bentzin Buscher, Bonny Bentzin; brother, David A. Bentzin; niece Barbara Bentzin; nephew, Mike Bentzin and Eight Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Joy Soulen Bentzin; father, A. E. "Mike" Bentzin and brother, Scott Lee Bentzin.
A Committal Service with military honors will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, 27 June 2020 at Oak Hill Cemetery.

WINNERS
Announcement is made today of the winners in the American Legion auxiliary Americanism contest entitled “America, the Land of Opportunity.” There were over 100 entries in the contest conducted through the English departments of the junior and senior high schools.
