Bernard Whelan
1860-1950
Funeral services for Bernard I. Whelan,
89, were held at St. Henry's Catholic Church.
He passed away on March
30, 1950. Interment was in
St. Bernard's cemetery where the Whelan family had a lot. The Rev. A. H. Foltz
officiated.
Mr. Whelan died of pneumonia. He had
made his home in recent years at the Buena Vista house on North Fourth Street. He was born in the
town of Emmet on Oct. 8,
1860 and as a child grew up in the region east of the city where
his father operated a nursery.
Mr. Whelan worked for some years as a
woodworker in the old chair factory of Philip Heinrich, then located in South First street. Upon the death of his father, he and a
brother, William, took over' the operation of the nursery business. Upon the
death of his brother, the business was sold to the McKay nurseries and Mr.
Whelan and his sister, Margaret, continued raising strawberries and other
plants which they sold. Upon the death of his sister, Mr. Whelan, who had never
married, gave up the plant business and retired, moving to the Buena Vista
house.
The only survivors are several cousins.
