Thomas Darcey

1886 - 1960

Thomas J. Darcey, 73, Route 1, one of the most widely known farm residents of the Watertown area and a member of a pioneer family in Dodge County, died of a heart attack while attending the 11 o'clock Sunday Mass in St. Bernard's Church.

Mr. Darcey, who was in his customary pew, collapsed shortly after the Mass began and was pronounced dead by a physician who was also in attendance. Mr. Darcey died in a place of worship which he loved and where he practiced his faith throughout his lifetime - a Catholic church.

He had been subject to a heart condition and several years ago had undergone treatment at Madison but he was able to remain active and on the previous evening had been at the Elks Club where he was one of the sponsors for a candidate in a special class that was initiated into Watertown Lodge No. 666, B.P.O.E. He was in his usual good spirits and spent the evening talking to old friends.

Mr. Darcey was born in this community on June 14, 1886, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Darcey.

His wife, who preceded him in death many years ago, was the former Helen O'Byrne. They had no children.

Mr. Darcey was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Watertown Council No. 1478, Knights of Columbus and the Watertown Lodge of Elks and the Holy Name Society.

Mr. Darcey was for many years active in the affairs of Dodge County and the town of Emmet. He was a mutual insurance representative for many years, and was also a treasurer of the town of Emmet and currently, a member of the Dodge County School Committee.

He was a soft spoken man, intense and earnest and possessed many excellent qualities that endeared him to a wide circle of acquaintances. He was never known to speak ill of anyone and he had integrity and charitableness. Many individuals felt his influence and help in their lifetime and he was always ready to assist in any good cause or community project.

The funeral was from the Boyle Funeral Home services in. St. Bernard's Church, the Rev. Patrick Dolan C.S.C., officiating. Interment was in St. Henry’s Cemetery.
