Local boy killed, three injured in weekend crash
TOWN OF EMMET - A utility pole was sheared in half and left
dangling from the wires just outside of Watertown when a car carrying four
local boys slammed into it Saturday night.
The crash left one boy dead.
Jason Bredow, 16, was killed and three
of his schoolmates were severely injured in the crash. The driver of the car, Matthew J. Prickette, 16, of N984 North Second Street Road, Watertown,
was listed at noon today in critical condition at the Milwaukee County Medical
Complex in Wauwatosa, a spokesman said. Prickette suffered head, neck and internal injuries,
deputies said.
Two other passengers in the car, Andrew Quanbeck,
16, of 1025 Richards Ave., Watertown, and David Neitzel,
17, of 1222 Oak St., Watertown, suffered head and internal injuries, deputies
said. Both were taken to Watertown Memorial Hospital. A hospital spokesman this morning reported
both in stable condition, meaning vital signs were normal.
The crash is under investigation by the Dodge County Sheriff's
Department and the Dodge County coroner.
The Watertown Fire Department was called at 10:12 p.m. Saturday to
Second Street Road, a half mile north of the Highway 16 bypass, sheriff's
reports show. Two ambulances and one
engine were dispatched. The Jaws of Life
were used to remove the youths from the automobile.
The vehicle left the roadway on the west side of the road,
striking first the utility pole and then a tree, the Dodge County Sheriff's
Department reported. Bredow,
seated in the front passenger side, was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m. by the
coroner. Quanbeck
and Neitzel were seated in the back.
None of the boys in the 1987 Buick Century four-door registered to
Karen R. Prickette were wearing seat belts, said
Capt. Robert Sell of the Dodge County Sheriff's Department.
"There was extensive front end damage," Sell said this
morning, noting the car has been impounded at the sheriff's department as
evidence. He said the department was
unsure who reported the accident.
"The utility pole was sheared off first and then the front of
the vehicle came to rest against the tree," he said.
All four boys were classmates at Watertown High School, preparing
to begin their junior year of school. They were all members of the
football team last year, and Bredow, Quanbeck and Prickette were
members of the golf team.
Prickette
is the son of Karen and Roger Prickette. Quanbeck is the son of Dr. David and Anita Quanbeck and Neitzel is the son
of Victoria Neitzel of Watertown and Jim Neitzel.
