Korean Veteran Cpl. L. Wanke,

Wounded in Action, Visiting Mother

1952

 

Cpl. LaVern C. Wanke, who had been serving with the U. S. Army in Korea for the previous several months, arrived in Watertown in February of 1952 to spend a 30-day furlough at the home of his mother, Mrs. Irene Wanke, route 1.

 

Cpl. Wanke, who was wounded in action, was awarded the Purple Heart, Korean campaign ribbon with one battle star, the UN ribbon and the combat infantry badge. While in Korea he served with Hqs. Co., 32nd Inf. Regt., 7th division.

 

At the end of his furlough Cpl. Wanke reported to Fort Sheridan, Ill., for reassignment.

 

Cpl. Wanke extended his thanks to all the persons who remembered him with Christmas cards and get-well cards while he was hospitalized. He also stated that he appreciated all other mail received while be was serving overseas.
