 “For a child is born to us, a son is given us;

          upon his shoulder dominion rests.”        Isaiah 9: 5 (A)

How enjoyable our Christmas program was last night!  Many thanks to Mrs. Oestreicher, the children, and any and all who helped make it such a nice night from the start of the first song through the last cookie eaten.

Speaking of God, I’d like to recommend some materials for ADULT spiritual growth that are relatively easy to digest and very accessible.  I have become more and more impressed with our own diocesan Catholic Herald Citizen.  Besides the weekly letter from our own Bishop Morlino, I always read the column called “Question Corner” by Fr. Dietzen.  He usually does such a good job explaining why we Catholics believe something.  I often gain some real insights from his answers to questions posed.  The Herald is also just beginning a six-week series on “Understanding the Mass” that looks excellent.

The other resources that many of you would find worthwhile are the DVD’s that you can get from the back of the church.  They are only asking for a $3.00 offering for a talk given by a nationally respected speaker on Catholic faith.  I am lucky to have a DVD player in my car so I can listen to them while on my way to Madison for a meeting or just traveling to see family or friends.  Most have been really, really good.

We have classroom winners to announce for the National Geographic Bee.  The first and second place winners will participate in the school level bee on Friday, January 4.  It’s in the Parish Center at 1:00 pm.  You would be welcome to attend, of course.  The questions are REALLY hard.  A student who genuinely wants to move forward to a state level and beyond would honestly have to spend a lot of time outside of school studying:  reading National Geographic and newspapers and magazines, watching the National Geographic type shows on cable, and just taking a keen interest in persons, places, history, and events around the world.  But what a worthwhile use of one’s time!  So if you have a youngster with those kinds of interests, please feel free to encourage him or her.  Anyway, our winners are Alicia Strupp and Devin Herritz, Kasey Caine alternate for eighth grade; John Tesensky and Ben Uecker, John Wagner alternate for seventh; Justin Drebenstedt and Kristin Miller, Angela Breunig alternate for sixth; Brian Hogan and Noah Cole, Greg Magnan alternate for fifth; and Sarah Bradow and Jenny Brebeck, Josh Schroeder alternate for fifth. Well done, students!

WHAT?!*  NO CHRISTMAS?!*  JUST SNOW?!*

Yes.  That is what the land of Narnia is like under the spell of the White Witch.  The third graders are thoroughly enjoying this classic by C.S. Lewis.

We have two typists in third grade who have mastered the 20 words per minute in our key boarding program at St. Henry’s.  Congratulations to Erin Haeger and Lacey Green.  Who will be our next “master of the keyboard?”

In math, we are busy memorizing our multiplication facts.  Keep practicing.  AR points are on the increase this quarter.  These third graders are becoming avid, independent readers – GREAT!

Our Advent devotions are definitely another highlight of our day.  Preparing our hearts for Jesus is very reflective, calming and truly insightful.  My prayer is for each of you to have a very blessed Christmas and a New Year filled with joy and happiness.

Enjoy!

Mrs. Zache
