“Say to those whose hearts
are frightened:
Be strong. Fear not.
Here is your God.” Isaiah
35: 4
Congratulations to our second graders
– almost – on the reception of their First Reconciliation this coming
Saturday. Many Catholics are used to the
older term, confession. It’s a gift
Jesus shared – and used as part of his revelation that he was indeed God (“Who
can forgive sins but God only?” Absolutely right on that, Pharisees!) But it is also a gift that he chose to share
with his appointed apostles and their successors on our behalf – He (the
Resurrected Jesus) breathed on them and said “ Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose
sins you forgive are forgiven them !”
Sadly, it has become a precious gift that has gotten put in the corner
and forgotten by many of us. Sometimes
it’s because of discomfort (Father will know I am not perfect! Truth to say, never a surprise to any
priest. They go to confession too.)
Sometimes it’s an inadequate understanding of theology (and psychology!) as in
“Why do I need to tell my sins to a man when I can talk to God directly?” Sometimes
it’s a lack of realization of how sin seeps into our lives, and we
rationalize it away as not so bad or there are a lot of people who do worse
things or . . . and on and on. But it is
a GIFT given to us by our Savior and purchased at a great price. (Look at a
crucifix.) Maybe we should bring that
gift back into the light and carefully examine it. I have a wonderful
CD on the Scriptural basis, theology, and beauty of this sacrament that I would
be delighted to share. It’s for adults, not
children, but some of us have not had an opportunity since we were children to
really approach this sacrament with an adult’s questioning mind . Please don’t hesitate to ask to borrow it. I’d love to share it!
We will be ordering some playground
equipment soon and would like to use the points from our Campbell’s labels to
get some of it. If you have been
collecting the labels, it would be great if you could send them to school next
week. You can actually find them now on
the Post cereal boxes. You will find a
full sheet with information about them in this week’s envelope on the other
side of the Athletic Association minutes.
A preview of some upcoming contract
service hours opportunities in January for all our parents. Our Athletic Association will be hosting our
Catholic league’s A teams basketball tournament Monday, January 17 through
Sunday, the 23rd. It’s a big
venture, and more volunteers are needed than can be readily provided by just
the parents of our A teams’ parents. A
plea for help will go out in the envelopes of Friday, January 7th. Please seriously consider helping. There will be a number of days, times, and
jobs open for you to pick from. All
those positions certainly qualify for the required 15 hours.
