“The Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.”

                  2 Thessalonians 3: 3

The Visiting Team experience went very well last Thursday and Friday.  They LOVED your kids --thought they were warm, funny, friendly, and very open.  (We like them too!)  Many thanks to the Home and School Association – you parents – for providing them with lodging and supper, and to the Education Commission for providing some tasty departure meeting snacks.  The Team also expressed how much they enjoyed all the interviews with many of you parents who met with them as part of school and/or parish committees and also in the casual conversations they had with many of you throughout the day.  Their final report will be mailed to Fr. Brian, myself, the diocese, and accrediting agency in a matter of weeks.  I will certainly be sharing it with the entire faculty and the Education Commission, but it will be available in the office for anyone to look over as well. It will be at least part of the basis for our ongoing improvement plans over the next five or so years.  (It never stops!)

The Student Council St. Vincent DePaul Drive will end next Friday, the 16th.  Could we encourage you to share with your children how important it is that we follow the Lord’s command “To Feed the Hungry?”  Perhaps they could do an extra chore around the house to earn some money to buy a nonperishable food or useful paper item or items this weekend. Good for their souls!

Your assigned Parent-Teacher conference days and times should be coming home in today’s envelope. Please check that we didn’t “goof up” or something has changed since you sent back the slip giving us your preferences.  If all is well, please keep the sheet as a reminder but send home the very bottom of the slip so we know you have the information.  We will see you THIS coming Thursday or a week from this coming Monday, the week of Thanksgiving!

Looking for Service Hours?  Do we have a deal for you!  One of our volunteers who has helped us faithfully for more years than most of us can remember, Mrs. Gloria Higgins, is looking for helpers for the annual parish Holly Berry Fair.  You probably read about it in the bulletin.  She could use help in two-hour shifts from Saturday, November 17 from noon to 6:00 pm and on Sunday, November 18 from 8:00 am to noon.  Her number is 261-6835, and I really hope there are people out there who haven’t been able yet to contribute much this year who will answer the call.  Thank you!

Good news.  The Hot Lunch manager, Mrs. Mary Jo Olejniczak, reports that, “One of the two yearly inspections of the hot lunch program was just completed.  We are happy to report we received an A+ rating.”  Seeing how sparkling clean they keep the kitchen and cafeteria, I, for one, am not surprised at all.  But “CONGRATULATIONS,” nonetheless!

A special treat for you adults who would like to enjoy some of the origami experiences your children are having.  Mrs. Nimiya – Misako Sensei –is offering two Tuesday night classes here at school from 6:30 to about 8:00.  The first is this coming Tuesday, the 13th and the second one is two weeks from then, November 27th, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.  Would you please give a call to school letting us know you are planning to come so Misako can have enough materials on hand?  Please come in the front doors of the school building on Cady Street.  Have fun!!

HOLA! COMO  ESTAS?

Would you know how to respond to this greeting in Spanish?  Most students at St. Henry do, and the sixth graders are putting this knowledge to use.  In addition to using the DVD program in Spanish, sixth graders are writing and performing dialogues using the vocabulary they’ve learned.  In some cases, they take their performances to a level that I wouldn’t have expected:  they have background stories to go along with their dialogues!  How wonderful to have such creative students.

In reading. The class has finished Summer of the Swans and has moved on to Where the Red Fern Grows, a classic that is still a favorite of many of the adults who read it long ago.  They are exploring the themes of working hard for something that is meaningful to you, taking care of people and pets who depend on you, and will cover several other thought provoking topics before they’ve finished with the book…but I don’t want to give any surprises away, so I won’t be sharing the topics of those future discussions with the sixth graders just yet.

God bless!

PRESCHOOL USES “CENTER SYSTEM”

The preschoolers have been concentrating on our new letters of the month which are Bb, Hh, and Mm.  With our new letters also come the little worksheets, letter books and cutout letters.  Sometimes as an adult (well most of the time) I feel that I am repeating myself with these activities.  We also have been working on social and listening skills with the help of our kindergarten friends and the “Center System”.  We start by joining the kindergarteners and splitting up into small groups.  Mrs. Lapp and I choose six or seven different activities that concentrate on different skills (ie. Number order, art blocks, sand, little people, letter page).  By using the Center System children have been learning the fine art of following directions as well as interacting with other youngsters.  Both of us feel the use of the Center System has been very successful.  I look forward to seeing you at conferences.

KidSmart Holiday Shoppes

This year’s Christmas store will be held on Friday. Dec. 7th for St. Henry school children only and on the 8th and 9th after all Masses for any parishioners who wish to shop.  There is still time for kids to earn extra money to shop for family and friends. The store is run as a “non-profit”enterprise, which means the things we get from the KidSmart company are sold to the children at our cost for them. We are always looking for donated items – handmade or otherwise, to sell at the store as well.  If you have something to donate to the store please get it to school no later than Friday, Nov. 30th.

Thank you, Mrs. VanDuser
