Tonight is the Home and School’s Fall Festival!  Have a wonderful time, Moms, Dads, children!  And a big thank you to all the volunteers who are making this event possible. Some of you will probably be making it a St. Henry weekend with the Oktoberfest doings on Saturday beginning with the 4:00 Mass and followed by food, music, and good companions in the same PC.  (Thank God for that facility.  It certainly gets used.)

Such a lovely day we all had on our HeritageFest Celebration on Wednesday.  The Mass with St. Bernard children was a joy – and your first through eighth graders should now be able to tell you who St. Cunegunda was/is.  (St. Henry’s wife.)  Some of the primary children had a good time learning some German; they are begging for more.  Ask the older ones how/what time of the year Laura Ingalls Wilder’s family moved from their first “Little House in the Woods” in Pepin, Wisconsin to their next one in Minnesota.  We all learned a lot about the Ingalls family and saw some amazing photographs of the real Ingalls and Wilders and the actors who have portrayed them.  They were sometimes in pictures with our presenter,  a “first cousin of Laura, twice removed.”  By the way, both Mrs. Ingalls Leisser and her friend-helper made sure to tell me after both assemblies how well behaved and attentive both groups were.  Always nice to hear.

The Home and School Scholastic Book Fair is next week.  This is a traditional HASA opportunity for you (and your children) to purchase books but please don’t feel pressured.  Some adults like it because they can purchase books for upcoming birthdays or even Christmas.  Youngsters will have a chance to preview books on Monday, and then purchase them – if parents send along money – on Wednesday.  At the end of every school day next week, Mrs. Brebeck (the chair of this event) will have someone manning the tables in the PC for anyone who would like to look at the offerings a few minutes before or after dismissal.  They also plan to be available to sell books during the Blood Drive on Saturday, the 23rd and after the weekend Masses on Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th.   More volunteers to thank!  (It’s a lot of work and time spent.)  Thank you, good people.

Red Ribbon Week is next week as well.  The Student Council provides ribbons for all the children ~ ones each classroom were able to choose by majority vote.  The most popular by far has a large hawk head with the slogan, “Stay on Track for Success DRUG FREE!”  Each teacher will incorporate some age-appropriate instruction on the topic sometime during the week.  If you are interested, the internet would provide some background history on the roots of this nation-wide observance.

Because we have had some generous volunteers helping with the raking of leaves, Mr. Ruehlow, one of our maintenance men, thought it would be useful for all to know that the city only picks up our leaves once a month, the second week of the month.  Our piles are left on the boulevard of COLE Street which is parallel to Cady but one block north.  If leaves are left there for weeks, they may kill the grass, especially if there is rain.  So timing may be important.  Makes sense.  He did want to express gratitude, however, for the assistance.  Doing a litter pick up project around the grounds is never time-bound.  For those whose work schedules are such that it is difficult to make meetings or help with school projects during the “regular” school or early evening hours, that’s a great way to gain some service hours – a contract requirement for families with K-8 children.

One of the painless ways our Home and School gets money for their many projects on behalf of the school children is through the Pick n Save’s refund program for non-profit organizations. Customers who use their Pick n Save card AND designate St. Henry School sure make a difference.  If you have never done that or you aren’t sure whether St. Henry’s is still receiving the benefit of your buying there, just stop at their service desk and ask them to check. It’s really easy for you to get a card that will give our school the points.  Of course, other ways to help without spending extra money are bringing in Campbell’s labels, Box Tops for Education, milk caps that have the obvious markings, and empty toner cartridges.  They all help.

I was putting in bank deposits earlier in the week, and the cashier (and I) ended up spending a fair amount of extra time taking out staples from some of the checks. It was because staples are very destructive to the machinery the checks go through.  I hadn’t realized that and thought some of you might not know that either.  So if you are sending along a check (or money), would you please use a paper clip instead of a staple or just slip everything inside an envelope to keep them together?  Thank you.

A message from Monica Steger, the Director of Music Ministry for both St. Henry and St.  Bernard Parishes:

“The Mission for St. Bernard's and St. Henry's is fast approaching (Nov. 7-Nov. 11), and we want you to attend!  I have been working with the kids to sing a prelude before each evening's service or Mass.  St. Henry's students are scheduled to sing for Sunday and Monday evenings (at St. Henry), St. Bernard's students are scheduled to sing for Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (at St. Bernard) , and all are scheduled to sing before the Mass on Thursday evening (at St. Bernard). Mission evenings begin at 6:30 pm so please be in the church by 6:15 pm.  Thank you!”

Miss Steger is really hoping there will be a large number of students who come with their parents and can thereby help with this.  Father Brian is very enthusiastic about the presenters, especially one he has heard himself and thinks is terrific.
