“If we have died with him, we shall also live with him.
If we
persevere, we shall also reign with him.”
from St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy 2: 11-12 7
October 8, 2010
Next Wednesday is a special day for us at
St. Henry School. It’s OUR celebration
of our patron saint, St. Henry, and of our wonderful heritage of 156 years as a
school. Since St. Henry’s official
church feast day is July 13th and we aren’t in school then, we decided to honor
him on every 13th of the month that is a school day by wearing St. Henry
clothing. But given our German immigrant
founders, we thought October – with its Oktoberfest traditions -- would be the perfect month for doing
something extra special in school. Hence
was born “Heritagefest Day.” Our normal school Mass will be a little later
(8:45) in order to make it possible for our special guests, St. Bernard’s
students, to join us in the Eucharist.
Afterwards, with a nod to probably the most common occupation of our
parish’s earliest members – farming – we are having a special visitor. She will share the life of a family whose
roots were in farming not far from Watertown:
the INGALLS of Laura Ingalls Wilder fame. Our presenter, Beth INGALLS Leisser, is a descendant of the family, and she has given a
number of presentations on her famous ancestors to both schools and adult
organizations. There will be two
offerings, to which any of you parents (or grandparents) are invited. One will begin at 10:00 am at which our third
through fifth graders and their counterparts at St. Bernard’s will be
present. We will have a second one at
1:00 pm for the sixth through eighth graders.
Since so many children (and adults) have read the Little House books
and/or enjoyed the TV series and/or seen the play, we thought this would be a
nice way to celebrate. Also, you will
notice on the menu that our hot lunch that day will have a German heritage
flavor as well. If you’d like to join us
for lunch, just let us know by Monday morning so the ladies will be ready for
extra guests! Their direct number is
261-3213.
Some members of our parish’s Athletic
Association are sponsoring/supervising an OPEN GYM for youngsters in grades 5-8
this Sunday evening, the 10th, from 4-6:30 pm.
It’s open to both St. Henry School and Parish Religious Education
youngsters. Parents are welcome to stay,
but they are really urged to pick up their children on time, as a matter of
courtesy and consideration for those already giving up a chunk of their
Sunday. Bless them!
There’s a need for a volunteer or two to
help in our library on Thursday afternoons and/or to spend a few minutes in the
early morning checking in books that students returned. Call Connie at (920)
988-1479 for info.
Please note for anyone hoping to volunteer
for anything involving school or parish children that one-time class required
by the diocese is being offered next Thursday at St. Bernard School! Great timing.
