“I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God you have . . . .

For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice

but rather of power and love and self-control.”

2 Timothy 1: 6-7

Our Father Bernie is leaving us!  Sad for us – a blessing for Kieler and Dickeyville.  Thirteen years of service here.  My goodness.  Many, many of our students were baptized by Father, received their First Reconciliation and First Communion from him, and celebrated the Eucharist with him week after week.  Since he’s been faithful to coming into the first through eighth grade classrooms on a rotating basis every week for years, they have also experienced him as a teacher of religion.  We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude, and prayers for continued blessings on him and his ministry.  The parish reception for Father will be following the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday, October 21st.  We trust most of you will make a special effort to see and thank Father in person.  We certainly will be doing some special things in school with the youngsters as well.

If you are a parent whose child will be part of St. Henry Athletics Association for the first time, you do need to set aside Thursday, October 18th for a meeting in the cafeteria at 6:30 pm.  It is a requirement that at least one parent attends or your child will not be allowed to participate in the program.  A couple of good things about this to share:  this is not a year-to-year requirement.  Once done, it won’t need repeating for a while.  Secondly, the meeting lasts no longer than an hour max.

A tradition continues.  For a number of years now we have been able to have a special event for school families in May in Wisconsin Dells.  Even though ownership of Treasure Island changed (and the connection we had with the former owner), the new management has agreed to also give us special prices for our “St. Henry School Families Weekend in the Dells.”  Although no longer going by the name of Treasure Island but Mt. Olympus, they kept the same prices as last year.  Please understand this isn’t really a school-sponsored event, but feel free to take advantage if you would enjoy this.  The cost for a two queen-beds room for Friday night, May 16, 2008 will be 69.00.  Saturday night, May 17, 2008’s room will be $90.00.  You need to make your own reservation with a credit card at 1-800-800-4997 and ask for Beth at extension 601.  She’s there Monday to Friday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.  The first night will be charged to your card and that charge is not refundable.  You may ask for a room with a queen size sofa bed and, while they last, there won’t be an extra charge for it.  They are reserving 50 rooms for us in the “Garden Level” on the first, second, and third floors so those who decide to go should see some familiar faces in the rooms near them.  This special deal is for St. Henry School families only so please be considerate and fair and not book for other non-school families.    They will accept reservations up to Friday, April 11th.  I will put that contact number in the ongoing calendar as a reminder beginning in late February or early March but if you want to make your reservation before that, you might want to write a note or keep this newsletter.  By the way, as many of you probably know, staying at Mt. Olympus gives you access to all their indoor waterpark facilities and the roller coasters and go-karts on the property that are open that weekend.  Since this is the weekend prior to Memorial Weekend they don’t usually have the outdoor waterpark operations open.  Probably, that’s part of the reason for the cheaper price but we are happy that some of you will be able to enjoy a nice family weekend together at a more affordable price.

With this newsletter the parent envelopes will contain a scary but important piece of information for parents entitled “Southeast Wisconsin Drug Threat Assessment Summit.”  Parents of children in the older grades will especially want to take the time to read this, but I thought everyone should have it.

BAND NEWS

Looking back at the past five weeks, students have already accomplished so much in music classes!  Grades Kindergarten through seven put on a spectacular show on September19.  Congratulations!  After critiquing our performance, we jumped right into a review of music basics in all grades.  Grades six through eight are continuing the World Music Drumming curriculum moving on to Ensemble 3.  We are still learning about music from Ghana, but have moved on to “High Life” music.  Ask your student how it’s different from our first two ensembles.

Band and choir are also off to a great start with a record number of twenty-one band members playing all possible instruments (except baritone).  The choir has about fifteen members presently, and we are working on selecting music together.  I expect great things from both groups and am very excited to see where the year will take us in music.

KEYBOARDING – AR – “THE ROUNDING SONG”--   “EARTH SONGS”

The above highlights, plus many more new experiences, are filling up each third grader’s September days.  In social studies, we have embarked on World--Class Tour learning about the oceans and continents.  “Name That Continent” or “Continent Quest” are two games that the third graders enjoy plus the “Earth Song”.  Every day you can find the third graders in the computer lab.  All of them are getting a feel for the keyboarding program.  You can really see that some of the children are practicing at home.  Great!  Our Accelerated Reader points are really adding up too.  Ask your third grader if they are close to having a bee “buzz” around the chart.  “The Rounding Song” is helping the third graders remember all the steps necessary to round numbers.  This is a fun song that can help when rounding numbers becomes a little complicated.

We are off to a wonderful start in third grade.  It is my prayer and hope that all of these third graders look forward to school and learning as much as I do every day.
