“Let the children come to me;
do not prevent them,
for the kingdom of God belongs to
such as these.”
Mark 10: 14
October 2, 2009
Dear Moms and Dads,
Welcome to October.
Today in your envelopes you may find
mid-quarter notes from your children’s teachers. The teachers in first and second grade, who
do not use the ABC system, are including a sheet for every student’s parents
that they would like you to look over and return with a signature on
Monday. The teachers in grades 3-8 are
only sending home a sheet – also to be returned Monday with your signature --
if there seems to be a concern that they feel you might want to be notified
of “officially.” They are pretty sure very few of you will be
“surprised” since you receive home every week in the Friday envelope copies of
tests and quizzes taken and quite a few of the homework and project results. Generally speaking then, if you are a parent
of a third through eighth grader, you can assume “no news is good news!” And for those who do, the good news is there
is a quite a bit of time yet for youngsters to make improvements before the end
of the first quarter on October 28th.
We have a tradition of usually arranging an
“all school” trip every year with the students in grades 1-8. This year we are again returning to the
Pettit Ice Center after an absence of four or five years. It’s the Olympic ice skating facility on the
same basic site of the State Fair Grounds located right off interstate 94 in
Milwaukee. This year we are going the
week before the winter Olympic skating trials are being held there so there
will be some pretty high quality athletes in training in the building.
The permission slip for this trip will be
in this week’s envelope. As always, if paying for the entire cost of the trip
is truly a problem, just call me (Mrs. Butzine at 261-2586) and we will
confidentially work something out. If you
would like to join us for our 10 am to 12 noon time on the ice, you would be
more than welcome. However, because there will be very little extra room on the
two buses we would ask that if you could drive separately (or carpool with
other parents) and meet us there, we would appreciate that. The cost for skating for you is the same as
for the students -- $5.00 a person. It’s
all happening two weeks from today, Friday, October 16th. This has always been a great,
community-building and fun event for the students. And to think we might even see some people
who will be in the Olympics this winter – icing on the cake!
Monday is a Student Council theme day. The youngsters on the Council picked this date
and its sports theme because of an interesting football game that will be on TV
that night. In order to help their class
earn a “spirit point” and a Hawk decoration on their classroom door, students
may wear any (appropriate) clothing with a sports team name on it –
professional or amateur – of any sport.
So a little league top with your child’s baseball team’s name on it as
well as a New York Knicks sweatshirt both “count.” We are also allowing Packers
colors –predominating green and gold – or, for the brave of heart, purple and
gold for fans of those “other guys” and Brett.
Monday morning you may encounter parked
cars in spots you normally use for letting off your children before
school. A number of people in the
community will have left them in the lot to join Fr. Brian on a bus tour to the
relatively new church/shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse. You’ll handle that fine, I’m sure. A little trickier – and may take even more
careful driving – will be Wednesday morning.
A number of people will be arriving (and parking) for a two hour
workshop on “Domestic Violence” being held in our Parish Center between 8 and
10. Please be extra cautious since many
of those people won’t be aware of our system of coming in the Second Street
driveway and leaving by the Cady Street one.
Be patient and kind with them – but super careful when dropping off your
youngsters.
Basketball season is only a few short weeks
away. Mr. Breunig, the director of
basketball for our parish Athletic Association, wants to remind everyone that
all physicals must be completed, fees paid, and all required forms filled out
properly and returned to the school office in order for your St. Henry athlete
(grades 4-8) to receive his/her “gold card” in the Friday, October 16 family
envelope. And all athletes must bring
that gold card with them to their first practice in order to participate at
all. Any questions? Call Bob at 261-8321 after 4 pm.
Standardized testing starts next week! The children in grades 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 will
be undergoing this lovely experience over the next several days into the second
full week of October. Teachers do try
very hard to not stress them out:
spacing tests out, having them take them at the times of the day they
are most “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.”
But we can’t stress how important it will be for them to come to school
with a solid night’s sleep and a good breakfast for the youngsters to show what
they truly know! It can’t hurt for
parents to give them the message that these are important enough for them to
give their best effort but not important enough to get overly anxious
about. Do their best and then let it
be! The tests are useful for us as a
school to get an overall picture of our strengths and to help us zero in on any
area that might need a closer look curriculum-wise. We will probably be able to share results
with you at our November parent-teacher conferences if past turn-around times
for receiving reports are any indication.
Last week there was an invitation from the
Diocese for you to attend a conference on the future of Catholic schools in our
diocese on Saturday, October 17 at the Bishop O’Connor Center between 9 and
2:30, lunch provided. I really urge anyone who understands the great importance
of these wonderful places for children to grow in an environment that helps
lessen the impact of the cultural negatives that bombard them to make their
voices heard. Our schools are not only worth preserving but expanding! Please register at http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB229N2BVQC4W (Sorry about the length of THAT!)
Enjoy your weekend. Please don’t forget to give God his due – for
you and yours!
