St. Henry School’s Mission:

To provide a fine, solid, academically based preschool

through grade eight CATHOLIC school education

that challenges and supports individual students

as they develop their God-given skills and talents.

I want to state again how impressive the turnout was for the very important Parent Orientation meeting on September 6th.  It was mentioned at either the Home and School meeting or the Education Commission one this past week how much information the teachers really are sharing.  So you can feel real pride -- one grade had all but three children represented by at least one parent; two grades had just two children with parents missing; two grades had everyone but one child not represented, and three grades had 100% attendance!  That was wonderful.  Thank you.

You will undoubtedly enjoy seeing each other again this upcoming week at the “spring” (rescheduled) program on Wednesday and then the Family Sock Hop on Friday night.  Both should be enjoyable evenings.  By the way, because every group is responsible for clean up after events, could you all be alert to clean up any messes you see as they happen – and please, if at all possible, stay to get things back in order, spic and span?  This would be especially important Friday night.  Our gym floor is an especially good one and it needs to be kept very clean both for looks AND for safety sake.  Spills that are not carefully and thoroughly cleaned up are a true hazard.  So thanks for keeping vigilant with that.

Also, just for general knowledge for now and in the future.  The Parish Center kitchen is a multi-use kitchen.  Probably it’s most important function is as a funeral kitchen.  The gracious and generous ladies who perform this wonderful gift for the bereaved families need to have almost all the cupboard and island space to work.  Their refrigerator – the white one – has to be almost bare if they are to have room for all the food that needs to be refrigerated.  So, please, don’t ever leave items in it, thinking that someone could use this some time.  They never get used because everyone presumes they belong to someone else.  Things spoil and they take up precious room.  So, although the intentions are good, the results are negative rather than positive   Hope this makes sense.  God bless.

Also, please don’t forget:  11:30 Early Dismissal this coming Tuesday, September 18

From Judy Cole, Home and School Treasurer

Just a reminder now that everyone is settled into the new school year.  There are still several families who have not paid their $40.00 for HASA dues.  Thank you to those who have taken care of that already.  Everyone is a member just by having a child in school. (Parents with preschool children only do not have to pay.) Please send a check made out to St. Henry HASA to school on Monday.  If there is a financial burden, please contact Francine or myself at 206-8748. I’m sure something can be worked out.  Thank you.

From Bob Breunig,  Athletic Association Board Member

Volleyball just started.  Basketball season seems like a long way off but it will be here before you know it.  Just a reminder to get all your forms in soon.  (Be especially sure to get that doctor’s physical done in plenty of time.)  Without all the paperwork done, you son/daughter can’t practice or play.

PRESCHOOL HAPPENINGS

We made it!  The first week was a little hectic and there were some adjustment time “traumas” but all is well.  We will now get to business.  Our letters this month are C, T and A.  Our goal is to at least become familiar and hopefully recognize the letter and its sound by the end of the month.  The children and I play games, discuss and review the letters daily during group time.  During “work time” I also try to pull your child individually to complete a piece of work to review letters as well as work on other skills.  Of course all this “work” is completed in a fun but important manner!

We will be walking to the fire station on Oct. 5th and Oct.11th to allow everyone a chance to go.  This trip will mark the beginning of our fire prevention unit.  The firefighters always give a great tour and talk about how to stay safe.  In addition to the fire station trip a pumpkin-picking trip is being planned.

On the 13th of every month will be St. Henry day.  On this day the whole school body is invited to wear a St. Henry shirt or St. Henry colors which are blue and gold.  I think it will be wonderful to see such school spirit and also to celebrate St. Henry’s feast day which is July 13th.  Also, be sure to check the calendar for Student Council days.  The Student Council plans dress up days and special activities about once a month.  The class with the most participation receives a spirit point and the class with the most points at the end of the year will receive a special party.  It is great fun to have a little friendly competition.  Have a great weekend!

MUSIC ACTIVITIES FOR ALL

What a joy to be back at school!  We really hit the ground running in music classes this year.  Upper grade students received participation confirmation sheets for band and choir.  These should be sent back as quickly as possible to aid in music selection and planning.  Students in grades 3 and 4 will be studying recorders this year and a paper also went home to order an instrument if necessary.  Parents, I really appreciate your prompt attention and return of these important documents.

Our spring, I mean autumn program has been rescheduled to this coming Wednesday, September 19 at 6:30 pm in the Parish Center.  You won’t want to miss this exciting show. Students in grades K-5 will be sharing American music with us in a show titled “Get America Singing” while students in grades 6 and 7 will show off their World Music Drumming skills.  Students are expected to wear red, white and blue (jeans and black are OK) and should be in their classrooms at 6:15 pm.  I want to give a friendly reminder that students are expected to attend and perform in the show, as it will be a large part of their first quarter grade.  Let the music begin!
