Dear Parents,

I hope you find the following some comfort.  Our diocese has very strict regulations regarding anyone who works with any of our parish children, whether in a paid or volunteer capacity.  It's part of a national program, mandated by the US bishops,  to provide a safe environment for all of our youngsters.  For most people, to be on an approved list to work with children, there are three requirements that must be fulfilled:

Agree in writing to have a criminal background check run.  (And, of course, to have nothing show up on it that would cause diocesan officials to have reservations about allowing access to children.)  By the way, specific information gained is very guarded.  If there is a reason to deny someone approval, only the pastor and perhaps a director of the program would be privy to that information – and they would keep that very confidential.

Attendance at a one-session class called  “Protecting God's Children.”  Lasting between two and three hours, they are held throughout the diocese, especially at the beginning of the school year.  They are free and can be found on the Virtus.org site by choosing registration in the left margin.  Click on Madison Diocese and you will find where and when they are being offered.  WE are having one here at St. Henry on Saturday, September 18 beginning at 9:30.  Held in the 412 N. Fourth Street Parish Offices (priest's “house”), one enters for it through the back door off Cole Street.  It's in the basement meeting area often called the rectory hall.

Obtain a booklet or read online at the www.madisondiocese.org  site the policy regarding abuse of minors, sexual misconduct, and sexual harassment and then sign a sheet that affirms that you have read the policy and agree to abide by it.  Online use “Diocese of Madison” tab near top of page, go down to “Safe Environment Home Page” and then right arrow to “Code of Pastoral Conduct.”

That's pretty much it.  Both the forms mentioned in numbers 1 and 3 above are available in the school office.  Call if you have any questions!

About the contractual obligation of 15 hours of service for parents of K-8 students.    That was a decision of the Education Commission, from a proposal presented to them by the Home and School Association.  The intent was to share the always needed volunteer work more fairly.  Some folks already have filled their fifteen hours and turned in their forms, forms not due until April 15 of 2011!  And they just keep on giving, bless them.  You do know coming to the parent teacher meetings on August 28 “counted,” and coming to Monday night's Home and School meeting also can be used.  Any parent who comes has the same voting rights as a regular board member and their input is just as welcome.  So there are lots of opportunities to get those in.  And all those donated hours of service are so appreciated.
