Dear Moms and Dads,

We are all so pleased to have you and your children as part of us for St Henry School’s 155th year!  A number of you commented on what a nice introduction to the school year the Saturday, August 22nd Open House/Parent Orientation/ Mass/ Home and School Picnic Supper was.  And it was. A very sincere thank you to all those who made it happen – and to all of you who participated.

Just as a point of information for new folks, the Scripture quote above was this week’s “Memory Verse” for children in grades 1-8.  We usually lead our weekly newsletter with it.  Next week’s will often be found at the end of the ongoing, updated school calendar which will normally be found on the other side.  Most verses this year will be found in the assignment notebook the youngsters in grades 2-8 use for daily work.  The hope - the goal - is to help our children get God’s Word deep in their very bones so it’s there to give them strength and support their whole lives long.

You will find an information sheet in this week’s envelope regarding the H1N1 (Swine flu) virus contagion prevention. Please take the time to read it over carefully.  Any medical people I talk to say this could be a real challenge this year but if everyone is conscientious about procedures, it will help a LOT.  I plead with you to NEVER send sick children to school.  We are under strict orders to send them right back to you!  Please do have some back up plans for retrieving sick children from school within at least a half hour (less is preferable) of receiving a call from school.  I know that can be difficult to arrange but it’s really important that you have that worked out in fine detail for this year. This bug is especially hard on young people, and we have a lot of those in school!

If you are a mom or dad that ever wants to volunteer in school or parish as a helper or chaperone or coach, we urge you to take the mandatory diocesan workshop “Protecting God’s Children” that is being offered here at St. Henry on Saturday morning, September 12th.  It usually lasts between two and two and half hours.  Almost everyone has found them very worthwhile – and they are offered at no cost.  It’s most helpful if you sign up on the Virtus.org site. Easy to do.  On the side margin of the home page, click on registration and then pull down to the Madison Diocese of Wisconsin and look for us. You may find the same workshop offered close by and on a more convenient date.  Doesn’t matter where you take them.  Just remind the presenter to let us know at St. Henry that you were there.

A reminder for Middle School parents that the excellent, free, absolutely-no-strings-attached college planning workshop is being held this coming Wednesday, September 9 in our own Parish Center at 6:30 pm.  No, it’s not too early to start gathering information.  You’ll find the hour and a half spent here this evening invaluable for your child’s future – and your finances!  Please let the presenters know you are coming by registering at www.AmericanCollegePlanners.org

Don’t you like our new St. Henry Parish School sign?  We have many to thank for it:  the eighth grade graduating classes of 2008 and 2009, the family of Art and Elsie Schaefer for the memorial gift in honor of their deceased parents, the Athletic Association, the Home and School Association, and the St. Henry School faculty.  Talk about pooling resources for a worthy project!

Market Day orders need to be sent to the school office on Monday, September 7th at the latest to be included in the September delivery.  You can enter Market Day orders online at www.marketday.com until Tuesday, September 8th at 11pm.  Pick-up for September Market Day will be on Friday, September 11th from 3-4pm in St. Henry's Parish Center.  Volunteers who would like to help on the day of pick-up should please call Patrice Walter at 261-1744 or Katie Schroeder at 261-9822 to let them know you're coming.  Great service hours project!

Lastly, you will find a permission slip included in the packet to cover walking trips a classes or classes may take during the school year.  If you read through, it will make sense (I hope.)  Teachers will inform you with a note when they plan on taking such trips and/or you will see them written about in this newsletter or mentioned in this newsletter ongoing calendar.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend.  We’ll see many of you in church at Mass if you stay in town.  St. Henry’s are at 4:00 on Saturday and 10:30 on Sunday.  St. Bernard’s are at 5:30 on Saturday and 8:00 on Sunday.

The Lord bless us, one and all!

Francine – Mrs. Butzine, Principal
