“Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks for a
reason for your hope,
but do it with gentleness and reverence.”
I Peter 3: 24
Have a lovely Memorial Day weekend. You probably know, weather permitting, there is a special memorial Mass at St. Henry
Cemetery on North Church Street – almost across from the entrance to the High
School – at 8:15 am on Monday.
Always the best way to start this special day of
gratitude for those who gave such great service on behalf of all of us in this
country. You do need to bring along your own lawn chair unless you’re
comfortable standing the whole time.
Our Watertown unit of St. Henry and St. Bernard
Knights of Columbus will be hosting the brat fry at Piggly Wiggly this Saturday
from 10 am to 3 pm. These men do so many good things on behalf of both our
parishes – and many others in the community.
These particular proceeds will go toward the Aspire Campaign at St.
Bernard’s. It is amazing from how far
away and from such a variety of points St. Bernard’s Church spire can be
seen. It is a great Watertown landmark.
I would like to urge all our Catholic adults to
regularly explore our madisondiocese.org website. There are so many opportunities for growth in
our faith available throughout the diocese.
A number of us may have to honestly admit that we haven’t ever grappled
intellectually with our faith as an adult if the last “classes” we remember
were taken as children or young adolescents.
In today’s world, to truly help others understand the richness, the
fullness, the truth of our Catholic faith – we probably need quite a bit more
knowledge and insights that are simply beyond a child’s ability to grasp. There
are GREAT books and other resources available from the EWTN folks and Ignatius
Press and on and on. An extremely cheap
($3.00 donation) and easy way to grow is to make use of the CD’s found in the
back of both our parish churches. Many
are by wonderful and extremely well educated individuals. St. Peter, before his death in the mid first
century, exhorted all of us to “always be ready to give an explanation to
anyone who asks for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and
reverence.” In today’s world, how
important that still is. So many are floundering. Which reminds me of a cute quote I came
across: “Don’t be so open-minded your brains fall out!”
