“All you peoples clap your
hands.
Shout to God with cries of
gladness
for the Lord, the Most High, the
awesome,
is the great King over all the
earth.”
Psalm
47: 2-3
With
this envelope, you should find a copy of the contract for next year. The first three sides of it are from the
diocesan office; the fourth side is the addendum with information specific to
St. Henry. Please read it over carefully,
fill out the requested information on page one, sign and date
the third and fourth sides, and return them to school next week. We will make copies of them for you and
return them in next week’s envelopes.
You will also find your service hours sheet for 07-08 and, if requested
or if you are a “new” family for 07-08 and didn’t let us know you will be
paying in full this July, a copy of the SMART Tuition monthly payment
enrollment form. If you haven’t returned
the Financial Options sheet requested for today, we may have to call you at
work or home early next week. (Many of you did. Thanks.) Sorry for the homework on this lovely
weekend.
We
are so grateful to the adult participants of last week’s Student Council Career
Day. Mr.Bill
Uecker spoke to the first graders, Mrs. Wendy Jo Smedema to the second; Mrs. Katie Schroeder and Mr. James
Conant to the third; Mr. Uecker, Mr. Conant, and Mr.
Green to the fourth graders. The fifth
through eighth graders learned about engineering careers from two women engineers
that Mr. Dave O’Connor arranged to come to speak with the upper grade group.
These people shared themselves, their time, and valuable information with our
students. Many thanks to them!
As
most of you know from attending meetings and/or reading minutes of those
minutes, this summer one of the projects your Home and School is undertaking is
to replace the rubber chips presently under our wooden play equipment with high
grade wooden ones. (It’s a little more complicated
than that but if you have been at the meetings you know that. If you haven’t been able to come but are
interested in more facts, contact me and I can refer you to someone
in-the-know! Thanks again to those
involved in the sub-committee researching that project.) If you would like to take some rubber chips
and use them under some equipment at your home, please call us. And/or if you know anyone or any other
institution that might want some, please refer them to us also. The rubber chips will need to go early this
summer – and we would rather not have to pay for their removal. We’d love to give them away.
Could
we share that many of us here at school are a little nervous about the flip
flops a number of the children are wearing?
I saw a little girl do a “flip flop” on the marble steps the other day
in the rain that made my heart do the same.
She came up with her head and dignity intact, but I know part of the
cause lay in her footwear. The flip flops certainly hamper the children’s
running at recess and offer no real support for growing feet. Other than that, they’re fine! We are still leaving the final decision
on whether or not your children wear them to school up to you, but we
did want to get in our two cents worth.
We appreciate your patience in tolerating our “preachiness.”
While adding some summer events to our ongoing calendar, I had cause to reflect on our parish and school’s patron saint. A thousand years ago today, St. Henry was involved in the headaches and responsibilities of being the Holy Roman Emperor, the job and title Charlemagne had for the first time two hundred years before Henry. The scholarly Catholic Encyclopedia lists his birth year as 973 and death year as 1024. He was married to Kunegunda who was also eventually canonized a saint. How’s that for a compatible couple? The article concludes, “Henry’s concern for the Church and its reform stemmed from his own devout nature, although in the affairs of practical politics he never lost sight of the well-being of the Empire. . . . (Henry) can be regarded as the model Christian ruler.” Pray for us and our leaders, good St. Henry!
“ETC.”
We
welcome Gabriel Elsen to our second grade
classroom. I knew he would fit in just
right because as soon as we settled into our pews for Mass on Wednesday he
turned to me and said, “I love being Catholic!” I responded with a thumbs
up. What a reminder to appreciate and be
proud of our faith and traditions.
All
of the second graders have taken and passed their first chapter book and
Accelerated Reader test. Each one is now
reading another book from The Boxcar Children series. I’m looking forward to the same enjoyment and
success.
On
Thursday the first and second grade went to Marquardt Manor to celebrate Mass
with the residents. We sang, “If I were
a Butterfly” and presented each resident with a handmade butterfly.
Our
eighth grade study buddies are helping us with our math unit on
measurement. We learn a lot from each
other.
I
want to thank Emma Cole, Jesse Jurgella, Joseph Brebeck and their families for participating in the May
children were very happy to be a part of the parish celebration. We are all looking forward to our school
Crowning at Sunday Mass on Mother’s Day.
The school Mass celebration on May 30th will be another chance to dress
in our First Communion clothes and honor Mary.
We look forward to seeing many of you there.
Mrs.
Menzia
FROM THE PHY ED DEPARTMENT
Students
tested their strength and conditioning during our physical fitness unit. They were tested in five different areas
including sit-ups, sit and reach, the mile run, push-ups and the shuttle
run. Students were able to compare their
results with the national average of other students at their same softball/t-ball
unit. The younger students will be
practicing their hitting skills off the tee, while the older students will test
their baseball skills in some competitive wiffle-ball games. Finally, with the
end of the school year nearing it is time to think about the activities on the
last day of school. If you would please
check your calendar, we will be needing some parents to help on June 12 running
some of our fun games on the half day which is the picnic. Sign-up information will be coming home soon. Thank you.
