“My sheep hear my voice.  I know them, and they follow me.

I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.”             John 10: 27-28

Mrs. Misako Nimiya, also addressed as Misako Sensei (Teacher), joined our school this week for the beginning of almost a year-long adventure here at St. Henry.  Mrs. Nimiya comes to us through an organization called the International Internship Program out of Tokyo, Japan.  She has taught middle school English in Japan for a number of years so she comes with a great deal of experience, as well as a gentle, inquisitive spirit and a cheerful, grateful heart.  We are so very blessed to have her in our community.  Please give her a warm welcome when you see her and feel free to invite her to your homes for a meal or to accompany you on an outing.  She may be able to say, “Yes!”   St. Henry parishioners (and former school parents) Donna and Bill Neeman are acting as hosts for Misako.  We are very thankful to them for sharing their home and hospitality with her and making it possible for us to have her at our school.

The Athletic Association Annual Banquet for the St. Henry athletes in grades five through eight, their parents, coaches, and coaches’ helpers is THIS Sunday.  It is a good time to again thank all the good, good people who make these fun sport seasons a reality for the students.  Only God knows how much time, work, and energy is spent on behalf of the children by the adults involved.  Only God can adequately reward them.  Yet a sincere thank you that evening to the board members and coaches would be in order!

We are SO PROUD . . . on two accounts.  Mrs. Smedema, our eighth grade social studies teacher, was informed this week that one of her Wisconsin Stock Market Simulation teams placed third in the South Central region’s junior division. While taking part in this activity sponsored by EconomicsWisconsin, the participants gain an understanding of “real world” investment strategies and market operations without using (or losing) real money.  They learn about business and the economy while they compete in managing hypothetical $100,000 investment portfolios in a ten-week program. Stocks are checked daily and the teams are allowed to complete fifty transactions over the time frame.  Her winning team consists of David Olguin, Kate O’Connor, Megan Feilbach, David Schuett, and Nancy Vega.  The students are invited, with their teacher and parents, to a special awards banquet and will split a small monetary prize to be awarded a little later this spring.  Good work, students (and teacher)!

On the second account, our own fifth grade homeroom teacher, Mrs. Catherine Lemminger, was named as one of the two recipients this year of the Educational Foundation of Watertown’s  “Class Act” awards. As was quoted in the Daily Times article of April 25th, “She (Mrs. Lemminger) works very hard to make difficult concepts crystal clear and even spends time after school tutoring children who need that extra touch to enhance their understanding and self-esteem. (She) expends an enormous amount of time and energy giving her best so her students can grow to their fullest potential.”  Congratulations, Mrs. Lemminger!   Well-deserved indeed.

Flash:  The Love and Logic DVD “Hope for Underachieving Kids –Opening the Door to Success” is here.  You’re welcome to stop in the office to check it out.  Have a lovely weekend!

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

As the fifth grade continues on the quest for scientific knowledge, they delved into several hands-on activities.  The students were “shocked” to discover how simple electrical circuits were to make.  Problem solving and troubleshooting spread like electrons through a current as students worked diligently to get light bulbs glowing.  Students got wired when they produced series and parallel circuits.  The making of electromagnets “sparked” their interests also.  “Watt” else did we do?  Fifth graders made quiz folders by utilizing the conductivity property of aluminum.  These science investigations are cool; they may even be hot (especially with bare metal wire), and they are electrifying!

Throughout the school year, fifth graders have used technology as a valuable tool to enhance their learning.  The Inspiration program was often used to denote facts extracted from a variety of text including current events articles from the Internet.  The Word program was used frequently as the foundation for a variety of writing projects including poetry and creative writing.  To spice things up, students utilized the program’s tools such as text boxes and watermarks to enhance documents’ organization of text and presentation.

Recently, fifth graders quickly learned Powerpoint and are now in the process of developing a class presentation on the topic of Earth Day.  Let’s all remember to celebrate Earth Day every day since we are caretakers of the Earth.

TRAVELS AND CONCERTS

Just before spring break, the band students traveled to Milwaukee to see the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra perform.  It was a wonderful concert and a fun trip!  Many thanks to our parent chaperones!  We hope to go again next year!

Choir and band students are working hard preparing music for our final concert of the year on Thursday, May 31, at 6:30 pm here at St. Henry’s.  While I don’t want to give away any surprises, our concert theme is “Journeys.”  Some groups are journeying through time while others are traveling to places and still others are describing ways to travel.  It should be a great concert!
