“A clean heart create for
me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me.”
Psalm
51: vs. 12
Happy SPRING to everyone! In today’s school envelope you will find a
sheet explaining the optional parent-teacher conferences for next
Thursday. It is totally up to you as to
whether or not you want to schedule any.
We do need the sheet back on Monday though. More information on the form itself.
The public school online summer school registration is now open, as of
yesterday. Again, I urge you to get that
done soon because the “cool” classes fill up quickly. If you haven’t received the promised
information as of yet or are now wishing you had signed up for summer school,
call Lincoln School at 262-1465. All
papers and fees, etc. must be turned in at Lincoln from now on. It’s at 210 N. Montgomery, and Montgomery is
a north/south street just west of Church Street (Highway 26). Good luck on getting the classes that would
be worthwhile for your youngsters.
The Service Hours sheet is due next Friday, the
15th. If you were unable to get all 15
hours completed, please include a check made out to St. Henry School for 10
times the number of undone hours. Therefore, if you did 12 hours and left 3
undone, the check would be for $30.
Thank you! We certainly
appreciate all the service hours’ help – we couldn’t be who we are without it
–and the extra tuition is helpful too.
If you had to miss the Home
and School fun night for the 4k through fifth graders on the 25th, you missed a
good time indeed. Many a youngster ran
up to me to tell me what a good time they were having. It was kind of an indoor church picnic with
cute games and craft activities for the children. It was “a winner.” Thank you to all who made it possible.
On Wednesday we were able
to present to the entire O’Brien family a check for 1,913.34. (There were a few more donations after the
end of our Penny War.) We can’t wait
until next fall. If all goes well, we
should be able to meet Josh’s service
dog. How proud the children will
be that they helped make it possible. Two of his former classmates – student
council representatives for the third grade – presented the check to Josh.
Parents of cantor choir
singers in the third and fourth grades, would you please check today’s envelope
for a special invitation for your children to sing on Saturday at the 4:00 pm
Palm Sunday Mass on April 16. We will
really appreciate getting your response back on Monday.
A News Release from the Watertown Daily Times
The
22nd annual Watertown Daily Times
“Design an Ad” contest was recently completed. The “Design an Ad” contest is a
joint effort between the “Newspaper in Education” program, the Display
Advertising Department at the Watertown
Daily Times and public and parochial schools in the area. Local businesses
provide pertinent information about their business and agree to let students
design ads for them. Teachers then assign an advertiser to a student, and
together they work on this unit over a four-week period. Upon completion, the
advertisers receive approximately ten designs, choose their favorite one or two
ads, and then sponsor them in the special section. All the sponsored ads are
then divided into three age groups and two design methods. From there, the chosen ads are judged and
rated first or second in their category.
764 students in grades 4-12 competed in three age
groups and two divisions: 4-6; 7-9;
10-12 in hand drawn and computer designed. 21 public and parochial schools in
Watertown, Johnson Creek, Hustisford, Lebanon,
Waterloo and Lake Mills participated.
(And now the really good news!)
6th grade student Emma Cole from St. Henry School
placed first in the 4-6th grade hand drawn category and received a $40
Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce gift certificate. St. Henry received a chec
for $25 on Mrs. Allison Kemp’s behalf, for helping her student achieve top
honors. The check is intended to purchase art supplies or a special item for
her classroom. The Watertown Daily Times sponsored all prizes.
We would like to add our congratulations to Emma and
Mrs. Kemp. Congratulations also to the
following students whose ads were picked by their business from among the
entries given to them and also published in the Times in that special “Design an Ad” supplement in Tuesday’s
paper: Hannah Stiemke,
grade 5; Elizabeth Kuckkan, grade 6; Sarah Bradow, grade 7; Trey Jahnke, grade 7 and Stephanie
Narvaez, grade 7. Anna Schroeder in
grade 3 had her “Peace Poem” also published in that same extra section too.
Well done, all of you! A sincere thank
you to the Times for being such a
supporter of all our community’s schools.
On Tuesday afternoon the eighth grade class enjoyed an ice cream treat
from them because they were picked in a random drawing of classes who
participated in a “no books” day. I’m
sure they were grateful their teacher, Mrs. Harms, had decided to throw their
name in the ring. There was a picture of
three of the eighth grade boys enjoying themselves in Wednesday afternoon’s
paper.
Lots of interesting activities recently that our
middle school students participated in.
The sixth through eighth graders and their teachers gave high marks to
the Youth Rally they attended at Mount Mary College on Sunday, March 27. It was
an afternoon of an inspiring speaker, great religious music, and quite a bit of
prayer and worship. They already told me
to put next year’s on the calendar because they definitely want to go back.
The sixth graders had a fun day in Milwaukee on
Thursday. It started with a science
“class” on weather and ended with a social studies experience -- experiencing a
great piece of Wisconsin by attending a Brewers game in Miller Stadium. Today, Friday, the fifth graders headed down
to Fort Atkinson and the Hoard Museum.
One of our former teachers and an occasional substitute here is giving
them a special guided tour. Also today,
Friday, the sixth through eighth graders are having a very special speaker on
the Civil War. Wearing (and sharing)
special clothing from the era, Mr. Ed. O’Brien, an amazing history buff, will
enrich their understanding of that sad but important part of our history.
Some interesting statistics recently out from the DPI
(Department of Public Instruction). Our
diocesan superintendent, Mr. Lancaster, recently shared this information in an
email to the principals.
Statewide, 41.4% of all students qualify for free/reduced lunch. This is
up from 29.5% in 2003-2004.
In
the Madison metro area, 51% of all students qualify, and in Beloit, 76% of all
students qualify.
Other
areas in Dane County average around 25% of students qualifying
Areas
of the Diocese outside of Dane County average around 40%-45% of all students qualifying.
Lots of folks struggling
but we know that the Lord doesn’t want HIS little children not to be able to
come to Him. So if you know some
families who are having severe financial difficulty but truly want to give
their children a Catholic school education, urge them to contact us. We will certainly be willing to work with
them if an environment that supports their religious values and practices and
provides an excellent academic education is important to them.
Last minute bulletin:
Used Book Fair on the 20th.
May begin bringing in gently used books next week. Children will earn credits to purchase “new”
ones at the Fair. More details to follow.
