A  message from Misako

My day at St. Henry started with Ohayou-gozaimasu.  I felt very happy to hear the American students greet to me in Japanese with smile.  And now I’m very sad I have to go back to Japan and say good bye to St. Henry.

The past year I really enjoyed my school life in the USA, not only the school trips, some special events, but also even ordinary lessons.  I learned a lot here at St. Henry – language, customs, and real American life I knew only through the books or movies.  The students are so sweet.  They have been patient to my poor English.  I wish I could speak English more fluently.  I want to continue to study English until the next time I see you some day.

Through eleven months I have enjoyed the beautiful seasons, green lawns in spring and summer, red and yellow leaves in fall, and white scenery in winter. But I feel the most beautiful thing was the people’s hearts.  Teachers always helped me when I was at loss. Parents are always nice and kind to me.  I’ll never forget St. Henry.  The year of 2007 and 2008 was the best year of all my life.  How happy I have been here!  The people I didn’t know before I came here became my important American students, coworkers, and friends.  I couldn’t express my feeling of appreciation, even though I said thank you 1000 times.  Thank you very much again to all the students, teachers, staffs and parents for your hospitality, kindness, and generosity.  SAYOUNARA.

Penny War Report – Amazing.  $1517.78 from the school families!  We will be naming four donkeys for the Ghana Catholic Relief Services project!  PRESCHOOL came out the winner with the best (lowest negative) penny total.  The seventh grade, although number seven (!) in the penny ratings, actually delivered the top amount to the bank of  $217.10.  Now you understand much of that came from children of other grades who “bombed” their container.  It’s the one time making enemies “on purpose” has a good purpose.  THANK YOU, THANK YOU.  Being a member of Christ’s Mystical Body certainly does make us want to help others we are intimately connected with throughout the world, especially those with whom we are united in baptism and the Eucharist.  May much good be accomplished in Ghana through more crops being planted and families having not only enough food for themselves but to sell at the market.

The Knights of Columbus recently announced these winners of contests taken earlier in the winter. Congratulations!  All the first place winners will be eligible to compete at the diocesan level in Madison.  We wish you well.  And heartfelt thanks to the Knights for the MANY ways they support both our Catholic schools.

BLING AND CA-CHING--THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF LEARNING

Would you liked to acquire a wealth of knowledge about a plethora of topics by reading nonfiction and get paid for it?  Well, that’s what fifth graders are doing.  Students practice their comprehension skills and increase their vocabulary by reading short nonfiction excerpts and then answer four questions.  The payoff is more than the benefits reaped by reading.  By answering all four questions correctly, students receive a dollar which has been named a “Lem Buck.”  Students spend their hard earned money to purchase items from our store on Fridays.  This incentive-based reading program then becomes a math lesson where students are taught how to count back change by counting up to the amount given.  A sale was recently held.  All items were discounted 25%!  Of course, there were strings attached.  After a lesson on calculating discounts and sale prices, students needed to arrive at the store knowing the sale price for the item they longingly desired.  Sorry, our store isn’t open to the public.

Electricity has been the hot topic in science lately.  Just ask any fifth grader who kept their fingers on wires too long.  When it comes to understanding electrons, students have really seen the light-literally

Fifth graders made simple, parallel, and series circuits.  They got really wired while making electromagnets.  Students used switches to open and close circuits.  They also made circuit quiz folders.  Don’t be surprised if your child hopes the Easter bunny loads up their basket with bulbs, wires, and batteries.  Have a wonderful spring break!
