“Take this, all of
you, and drink from it.
This is
the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant.”
A happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all! We were awash in green today, treated to two very talented youngsters (Juliena Herritz in grade six and Kristin Miller in grade five) who shared a wonderful Celtic dance with us, and enjoyed supporting St. Bernard’s school children by viewing their parade this morning. A prayer ascribed to St. Patrick was prayed by many classes, and everyone learned a bit about this man who had been captured from Britain as a sixteen-year-old by Irish pirates. He worked as a slave for six years there and finally escaped. Yet, instead of being embittered by the experience, he begged to be sent there as a missionary. Finally, in his early forties he was ordained a bishop and sent to the people of northern and western Ireland. This all happened in the first half of the 400’s – and the world hasn’t been the same since!
SOME important reminders. They won’t affect everyone, but I’ll feel better if I bring them to everyone’s attention here.
If you had planned on purchasing a St. Henry School Yearbook (or two), Mrs. Smedema has to have all the orders in on Monday. So if you haven’t already, you really do need to send your check in this coming Monday. It should be made out to St. Henry School. The books are $10.50 a piece. The Yearbook Committee of a couple of teachers and some older students have been working very hard to make it special again. (THANKS for all your work, Committee!)
SERVICE HOURS (or money in lieu of) are due exactly a month from today. As your contract spells out, if you have been unable to give these hours to the parish and/or school, then you owe $10 per unserved hour – a total of $150 if none were able to be accomplished. Either the slip or the money or a combination thereof is due into school on or before Monday, April 16th. On the plus side, you can begin earning service hours for the school year 2007-2008 on that same day.
If there is anyone with an athletic uniform (or a part of one) still out there, PLEASE, it really needs to come back to school on Monday, clean as a whistle with identification. Today, the registration materials for NEXT year’s sports season are coming home in the third through seventh grade packets. It would be so helpful if you could get at them in the next week or so. You probably recall in last week’s packet that it was mentioned that the Board is in need of some new members. Our program is completely dependent on volunteers. Need I say more? Also, those of you who ordered team pictures, you will find them in today’s envelopes. Many, many thanks to the board members who have been working so hard on the registration and pictures projects.
Teachers have asked me to mention that a number of children have been consistently tardy. Not a good thing. Please, parents, is there a way to adjust schedules slightly so that the “consistently” word becomes a thing of the past? Obviously, it is not good for a child to get into that habit, and it is truly disconcerting for teachers to have to repeat and repeat those important early morning instructions and procedures. Actually, it is a little unfair for the whole class to get interrupted by latecomers and have unnecessary valuable academic time lost day after day because of them. Three to five minutes in one day doesn’t seem like much but multiply that by 180 – now we’re talking about some serious loss!
“MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS MONTH” CONTINUES
Draw a treble clef sign.
How many lines are in a staff?
These are examples of our “Music in our Schools Month” trivia
questions. For all of March, students
have a chance to win prizes and celebrate music in school and life. Since the younger students in kindergarten
through second grade are working on reading music, they can answer most of
these challenging questions.
Recorder Karate allowed many students to be very successful with
the recorder in grades three through five.
Ask your child what color belts they have earned already!
Students in grades six through eight are excited to be
drumming! They are finishing up the
first unit by playing Ensemble One. We
have three drum parts plus a cowbell and a shekere
part all going at once! Fifth grade has
just started the first unit and is discussing the circle of respect and how to
play the instruments.
As April is “Jazz Appreciation Month,” all classes will be
changing gears soon to study this American music style. After that, we’ll be preparing American folk
music for our spring show!

THIRD GRADE NEWS
“Mountain Climbers, Downhill Daredevils, Lumpy Letters, Backward Balloons”-
just ask a third grader what cursive letters they have learned and practiced!
Congratulations to Megan Bacchi, Brett
Caine, John Hertel and Grace O’Connor. These four students have completed the
key boarding program at St. Henry’s. Who
will be next?
The third graders are learning how important memorization of their
math facts is. Knowing their addition
and subtraction facts will make multiplication a lot easier.
In Spanish we are labeling maps using Spanish vocabulary. Some Spanish words are spelled like our
English words. Some are very
different. It is a challenge!
We all had a wonderful experience at the Maranatha Youth Concert
at Calvary Baptist Church Thursday. We
are looking forward to the Wisconsin Chamber Youth Concert in Madison coming up
in May.
Our penny war is in full swing every day. The children certainly look forward to this
fun time each morning. The purpose –
giving to others who have much less than we have -- is, nonetheless, always
evident.
