Jesus said to his disciples, “Not everyone who says to me,

‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven,

but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.”

                                Matthew 7: 21

EARLY Dismissal (11:30) this coming Thursday, March 10!

For Lent, we will be memorizing some of the verses of Psalm 51, one of the great penitential psalms in the Bible.  Many of the verses will ring in your ears since you’ve heard them in the Mass numerous times;  for a number of the children some of them will actually be a review rather than brand new.  They can be prayed in sorrow for sin whether  we use them as an eight-year-old or an eighty-year old.  The tradition about this psalm is that King David himself composed it after being horrified by his own sinfulness – he dreadfully abused his power by having a good man killed in order to take the man’s wife (Bethsheba) for himself.  It’s a powerful piece of Biblical history.  You can find the full story in the Old Testament (Jewish Scriptures), Second Book of Samuel, Chapters 11 and 12.

You do know that the teachers make their  tests  on the “memory work” very simple and easy to score well on with the barest minimum of effort.  That week those verses, on prominent display in the classroom, are recited as part of the daily prayer.  Lower grade teachers always have permission to shorten them to what they think the younger children can handle.  If you want to help, incorporating them into your children’s night prayer would be an excellent idea. The upcoming ones can always be found on the bottom of this newsletter, after the calendar items.

Reminder of an important SUMMER SCHOOL deadline: registration (and health information form, if needed) must be in by next Friday, March 11.   You should be able to go online and see the offerings now.

Every Lent we have a tradition of having a Penny War for a worthy cause.  It lasts for two weeks and during that time about 7-10 minutes is given every day for youngsters to contribute pennies to their homeroom container and to go to other classrooms to add NON-pennies (coin or paper money) to offset the penny totals of other homerooms.  The proceeds this year will help with the expenses of a obtaining a special therapy dog from 4 Paws for Ability in Xenia, Ohio, for Josh O’Brien.  Josh is a former student who has been afflicted with literally thousands of seizures since he was in kindergarten here. We will begin this year’s battles next week Wednesday, on Ash Wednesday, after a special assembly to help the children understand the touching value of their giving.

HASA is sending home order blanks today for a spring fund-raising effort.  The very popular one for PJ

coupons is part of it.  The other is new – for Berres Brothers coffee.  I have been impressed that the HASA Board has tried hard to support local businesses with good products -- while keeping the cost for most products surprisingly reasonable.  So if you can help, wonderful.  Thank you!  Orders with payment should be in the office by Monday, March 21, our first full spring day in school.  Come on, Spring!  We all eagerly await your arrival.
