“Do to others as you would have them do to you.

For if you love those who love you,

what credit is that to you?”                                         Luke 6: 31-32

For those with budding young actors and actresses, there are two opportunities for involvement in our community coming up.  This Monday, February 12th, at the Performing Arts Center at Jefferson High School at 700 Milwaukee Avenue, Jefferson, there will be auditions for children who would like to be in the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of Robin Hood.  Performances are already next Friday, February 16 and Saturday, February 17 (4:00 pm)!  Youngsters who are chosen should plan on staying Monday until 8:00 pm.  They would then have rehearsals on Tuesday the 13th through Thursday the 15th from 4:00 pm until 8:15 pm.  Pretty intense but only for a week.  Questions can be directed to 920-674-2179.

Closer to home is an opportunity to be in Watertown’s S-Team Youth Theater’s production of Alice in Wonderland.  Their auditions are being held at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 13th at Watertown Community Church, 106 East Madison (Madison Street is one block north of Main Street and parallel to it.  This building is just a few blocks away from St. Henry.) Their play is being performed on March 29th and 30th.  You can call 261-1822 for more information.

The playground sub-committee wanted me to share the following information so you would have it for the Home and School meeting on Monday.  If you have a strong opinion but can’t make the meeting, please call your classroom rep or one of the officers.  Anyway, the sub-cmte will be presenting three options.  Costs are based on estimates gotten for the ground surface under the larger of the two playground equipment areas, not both. Tire chips would be removed in all three options and volunteers would be needed for some of the work.  Option one:  Use wood chips for the whole area -- about 30 feet by 42 feet. At costs running about .65 to 1.00 per cubic yard, this would run about $1260.  Option two:  First put a concrete base under the area; then use mat pads with adhesive under the equipment proper and fill in with wood chips around the outside.  The materials alone for this would run between $2500 and $3500.  Third option: Poured in rubber material, similar to what is now at Chamberland at Riverside. That would run between $13,500 and $14,000.  Thank you so much, sub-committee, for all your work.  I’m sure there will be lots of questions for you at the meeting.  Big decision to make, HASA!

Congratulations, all.  That’s certainly, in great part, the result of a lot of hard work.  Three cheers!

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN

Run, run, as fast as you can, you can’t catch me.  I’m the gingerbread man!  First grade has been reading the wonderful folk tale, “The Gingerbread Man.”  We have read many different versions, including the New York City and Cajun Gingerbread Man, and then have compared them.  We found out that the gingerbread man usually gets eaten by a fox and that different authors/retellers choose different characters for those who chase the gingerbread man.  We will be making gingerbread men with the fifth grade later this month.  Watch for details.

In math, we have made it through the difficult section on subtraction.  We are now able to add and subtract without counters.  Now we are memorizing our addition facts, using the wonderful new time test program.  The children really love passing on to the next level.  Keep practicing those flashcards.   Speed with accuracy is the key!

In religion, we will begin a unit on missions, with an emphasis on Korea.  We will have a guest speaker, my cousin, who was adopted from Korea and has adopted her own daughter from Korea.  She will share pictures and artifacts from Korea as well.   Thank you Kim!

NEWS FROM GRADE EIGHT

Did you know that there are less than 80 days until graduation?  We just figured that out!  We recently inquired and found out there will be an important meeting for eighth grade parents whose children will be freshmen at Watertown High School for 2007-2008 on Monday, March 5th at 7:00pm in the high school auditorium.  Isn’t that exciting?  I know the students are eager to find out about classes and what high school life will be like.

On January 25th, we celebrated Mass with the residents of Marquardt Manor.  I was very impressed with the eighth grader’s behavior and even had a man come up to me after Mass telling me how wonderful the kids were during the liturgy.  I just thought you should know.

We have just started reading the Bronze Bow in class.  This historical novel is an adventure set in a time of political and religious upheaval.  There are four main characters that we will be journaling about, and we’ll also be contrasting how life in ancient Israel was compared to life in modern-day Israel.  This book will spark many discussions in class and prompt many different writing activities.
