“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

      bless those who curse you,

pray for those who mistreat you.      Luke 6: 27-28

We have had a very full and fun Catholic Schools Week.  Many thanks to all who made it possible.  Once experienced, the students look forward to it every year.  Again and again and again – God richly bless you for all you give in “time, talent, and treasure” to give this generation of children the gift of a Catholic education here at St. Henry.

Since St. Valentine’s Day is approaching soon, just a quick word on a “policy” we have here at St. Henry regarding the giving out of cards (or invitations to parties and the like for that matter).  Either every student (or every boy or every girl) in the classroom must receive one or they may not be delivered at school.  The US mail still works!  And it would be good training in kindness to caution your child to not talk about a party at school at which every person is not invited.  You all remember some of the heartbreak from grade school friend favoritism, I’m sure.  It’s not always avoidable and life does sometimes hurt, but if just being a little sensitive to the ones around us can prevent unnecessary pain, we should!

Speaking of St. Valentine, let me share a tidbit from the very scholarly New Catholic Encyclopedia.  “According to the Liberian catalogue and Liber pontificalis – (I have NO idea!) – Pope Julius I (336-356) built a basilica on the Via Flaminina, 2 miles from Rome, over the sepulcher of the martyr, a Valentine whose cult is attested to by 4th century inscriptions.”  Those inscriptions demonstrate veneration of this 3rd century priest who was executed for his faith about 269.  There was a photograph of a piece of stonework found in the excavations of an early Christian cemetery near this church of St. Valentine that certainly dates back to the 300’s.  The evidence of these brave ancestors of our faith always touches me.  How much we owe them for passing on their beliefs to us over the centuries.

Mrs. Mallow and other members of the Home and School Association sub-committee studying different options for the ground cover under the playground equipment invite you to their meeting on Wednesday, February 7th.  It will begin at 7:00 pm and is being held in Room 206.   The sub-committee will bring its recommendations to the full Home and School meeting on Monday, February 12th so they welcome any thoughts, information, or insights you may have.  If you are unable to attend but wish you could, please share your opinions with Ann or Bill Uecker or Katie Schroeder.  Thank you and THANK YOU, sub-committee, for your work on this important topic.

Finally, Mrs. Olejniczak, our hot lunch manager, asked to share a few words:

“Recently, on the national news, there was a segment on the sanitary conditions of the school lunch programs in other states.  Some of the schools rated very poorly.  I just thought you parents would like to know that here at St. Henry we have an unscheduled, surprise yearly inspection done by the city-county health inspector.  For the last five years, we have received an A+ rating – the best one can get!”

I commented, when Mary Jo handed this to me, that I have NEVER seen their kitchen look anything but spotless.  We are blessed for the care our ladies take in keeping everything in tiptop shape. Thank you!

Stay safe and warm over these next dangerously-cold days.  We know we can count on you to be sure your children are dressed appropriately for our “interesting,” Wisconsin weather. God bless.

A YEAR OF GREAT SPIRITUAL GROWTH

This is a year of great spiritual growth.  Parents attended the first meeting which begins their journey with their child to the reception of the Eucharist.  Parents are important partners in this process.  On Sunday, February 4th the second graders will be presented at the 8:30 Mass.  The Knights of Columbus will be preparing breakfasts for the children and their families.

All second graders are asked to sign up to take up the gifts at a Sunday Mass sometime during this preparation period.

Celebrating the Eucharist is certainly very important at this point and every opportunity in our lives.  We have already learned and memorized the responses to the prayers during the Introduction and the Liturgy of the Word.  As we proceed with our lessons we will closely study the parts and prayers of the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

We are also growing mathematically.  Four children are well on their way to mastering forty subtraction facts in one minute.  It is hoped that those working in addition mastery step up their dedication and practice.

We have had a very enjoyable Catholic Schools Week.  We are all thankful to all who made this week and all other weeks possible at St. Henry Catholic School.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION NOTES

With the end of January comes the end of our pickle-ball unit.  The younger students got a brief introduction on the basics of pickle-ball, while the upper grades tried to fine-tune their pickle-ball skills.  So as we transition into the cold month of February, we will stick with the idea of hitting something over a net.  From a wiffle-ball to a birdie, we will make a smooth jump to our badminton unit.  Once again the younger grades will get a brief introduction to badminton, while the upper grades will attempt to master the game of badminton while playing with a partner in a doubles tournament.  Kindergarten through grade five will also be jumping back and forth between scooters and jump ropes in the next few weeks.
