It (love) does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.

It bears all things, believes all things. . . .”            Corinthians 13: 6-7

From all the interest in last week’s information about the school families’ weekend in the Dells May 18-20th, it looks like many of you are in for a good time.  You will find information in the calendar about calling your reservation in if you haven’t already done so.  The cut off date for that is Monday, April 2nd.

Lest anyone forget:
NO SCHOOL next Friday, January 26th.  Teacher meetings and workday.
I understand there are some exciting skiing plans on that day for our middle school students who are active in the parish youth group.  Have fun and stay safe and sound.

The children in the classrooms in grades four through eight participated in the Reader’s Digest Word Power Challenge this week.  Five grade winners emerged.  They will take an online test on Wednesday morning the 24th in an attempt to go on to further competition.  We wish them well and “they” are
Brian Hogan in grade four, Justin Drebenstedt in grade 5, Patrick Roche in grade 6, Emily Christian in grade 7, and Megan Feilbach in grade 8.  Go for it, boys and girls!

From Mrs.Kathy Van Duser:
“I’d like to extend a belated (but still very sincere) thank you to my helpers for the Secret Santa Store – Kerry Bacchi, Katie Schroeder, Judy Cole, Pam Kohls, Suzanne Mehltretter, and Michele Uecker.  The day would not have happened without their hard work!  Many thanks also to everyone who donated items for the children to purchase.”  And to that we would add “Amen.  And God bless you all!

Oh, dear.  We are in need of a playground supervisor again.  For Thursday lunch hour.  Approximately 11:40 to 12:40.  The pay is in no way near adequate for the essential service given but your reward will be great in heaven!  Or the faculty will personally protest as a group at those pearly gates.  Our supervisors are worth their weight in gold and then some.  Please call Mary Denault at 262-1815.

And another need – or opportunity, if you will!  From Mrs. Sharon Jahnke comes this request:  “Market Day Co-Chairperson needed to be available one Friday afternoon a month from 2:00-4:45 pm to help with order pick up day.  Involves working with a wonderful representative from Market Day and Mrs. Harms and her eighth grade students.  This counts toward volunteer hours!  Please contact Sharon Jahnke @ 261-0437 for details.”  Market Day monies all go to Home and School projects. Such a gift.

Today saw the first game of a new event for us.  The third through eighth graders who signed up to participate in our first school checkers tournament played at the end of their lunch breaks. There are fifty students involved!  It will take two wins out of a possible three per set for someone to proceed to the next round.  Children in each lunch section will compete with each other until we have a winner from both who will then play each other for the honor of St. Henry School 2007 Checkers Champion.  If your child is involved, I’m sure you will be kept posted.  We’ll let everyone know who the champion is when he or she triumphs sometime in February!. Sounds like fun, eh?  God bless.  See you in church.

ART NEWS

Congratulations to Emily Lemminger!  Emily and the rest of the fourth
graders entered a contest with the theme “Ability…Not Disability.”  This is
an organization that helps people with disabilities.  They have an art
contest for students in counties near Milwaukee.  Emily placed third out of
all the third through fifth graders who entered.  Wow!  She received a
calendar with her picture printed on the month of April and twenty-five
dollars!  Great job Emily!

The rest of the students in school have been busy creating new artworks.
The first graders have studied Paul Klee and painted with warm and cool
colors with sponges.  The second graders have created Mondrian style
artworks and the third graders are busy illustrating their story about
taking a trip to Africa.  Please make sure you walk the halls once in awhile
and see our new artwork.  The children are really proud of their work.
Happy winter.

FOURTH GRADERS ARE WORKING HARD

How the year has flown!  I cannot believe how much we have already
accomplished this school year.  Our fourth graders are working very hard on
their typing.  We now have less than half of the class working on getting to
the goal of twenty words per minute without any errors.

Those who are done are still working on their skills, but are also using
their imagination in their typing.  Ask a fourth grader about their recent
creation; some are very unique.

We are soaring through our multiplication facts with our new program; soon
we will have some on a new rocket for division.  Keep working on facts with
your student, it will truly help them succeed.  Now that I am seeing a
stronger base on multiplication facts we have gone back to finish the second
part of chapter four, division.  The fourth graders are very excited about
this new challenge.

We are expanding our state history knowledge as we learn about why so many
thought Wisconsin was a good place to settle.  The fourth graders have found
it interesting to learn how people (immigrants) blended in to their new
surroundings and seeing how people survived, especially when people thought
that Germans in our country were regarded as traitors during WWI.  They have
also started looking at reasons why people might immigrate to another
country.

With the second semester here we will be reading another trade book and will
have everyone finished with their typing so we can work more on our writing
skills.
