St. Henry’s Hall Scene of Notable Gathering of Knights

Large Class Joins Catholic Knights of Wisconsin

at St. Henry’s Hall on Sunday Afternoon

Watertown Daily Times, 04 28 1919

In the company of delegations of visiting Knights, Watertown Branch No. 120, Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, received into its circle new members, men and women, to the number of 125.  Seven members joined Watertown Branch No. 85 and five members of the Clyman branch were also initiated with the class at St. Henry’s hall Sunday afternoon.

The initiations ceremony was conducted by a degree team of the Milwaukee branch composed of Judge John C. Karel, John M. Callahan, John P. McGalloway, Frank Drexler, John Gregor, William F. Arens and Vint Callahan.

The rites, which are educational and religious, were followed with great interest not only by the candidates but by those already members of the fraternity.

The Catholic Knights of Wisconsin admits into its membership both men and women who are practical Catholics and the growth of the order has been great during the past few years.  Besides the insurance feature, which should appeal to all persons who believe in caring for their families, is conducted on strictly business lines under the best recognized principles.  Outside of this the order has for its purpose social and charitable endeavors tending to bring its members into closer fellowship.

All of the elementary principles of brotherly love and fraternalism were fully exemplified for the benefit of the new members.

Supper Served to 350

After the ceremony of initiation, candidates, visitors and members to the number of about 350 repaired to the sumptuous dining room in connection with the hall where a bounteous supper was served by the ladies of the branch.

At 8 o’clock the hall was filled to its capacity by those who came to hear the musical and literary program and listen to the address of Secretary John M. Callahan of the state order.

Father Francis Schwinn presided and in opening the meeting said that this was a day of great joy for the local branch and for the congregation.  That the spirit that had brought about the large class who had become members of the Catholic Knights, was working for the betterment of the church and the community.  That it was very gratifying to witness the great interest that all were taking in religious matters and the work of their church, especially the young people, who mostly composed the class.  He congratulated all on the happy event.

The musical program carefully prepared for the occasion was rendered in a manner that completely captivated the audience, and great applause followed the conclusion of each part.

Secretary Callahan’s Address

Secretary John M. Callahan of Milwaukee, always eloquent and forcible, delivered an address regarded as very elevating and instructive.  He explained in terse language and with apt illustrations the benefits to be derived from fraternal societies such as the Catholic Knights.  The hall was splendidly and profusely decorated with the national colors and taking his inspiration therefrom, Mr. Callahan made a strong appeal for everyone to remember their country at all times and especially when it is passing through a crisis.  He urged everyone to buy Victory bonds to the utmost and paid a glowing tribute to the glorious heritage possessed by Americans.

The class initiated was largely secured through the officers of the branch and Joseph M. Jungen of Milwaukee, state representative of the order, who was present at the ceremony.
