Helen Holmes

1908 - 2002

 

Helen D. Holmes, 93, of Lancaster (WI), died March 24, 2002, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster.

 

Services were at Orchard Manor Nursing Home Chapel, rural Lancaster, with the Rev. Mark Dieter officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Watertown.

 

The Schwartz Funeral Home, Lancaster, was in charge of arrangements.

 

She was born on Oct. 16, 1908, in Watertown, daughter of August and Gertrude (Diemel) Bischoff.

 

She graduated from Watertown High School in 1926. She later graduated from Carroll College in 1930. She began her teaching career in Wabeno, and later in Adams-Friendship.

 

On June 26, 1935, she married Frank Holmes, in Watertown, Wis. In 1957, they moved to Lancaster, where Helen taught in the English department at Lancaster High School. She finished her teaching career with the Cassville Community School District, retiring in 1971.

 

She was a member of the Miriam Chapter 15 Order of the Eastern Star, Platteville, where she was a 50-year member and former mother advisor of the Rainbow Girls. She enjoyed Adams-Friendship basketball, swimming, class reunions and traveling. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

Surviving are two sons, John P. (Sharon) Holmes, of Madison, and David P. (Gloria) Holmes, of Platteville; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1994; her parents; and a brother, August Bischoff.
