Elizabeth Hempel

1919 - 2007

 

Elizabeth Lydia Hempel, 88, of Watertown, passed away Monday afternoon, Sept. 10, 2007, at Golden Living Center in Watertown.

 

The former Elizabeth Lydia Kleemann was born on July 23, 1919, in Watertown, daughter of Ferdinand and Elizabeth (Hannem) Kleemann. On Dec. 4, 1942, she married the Rev. Harold Albert Hempel at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown. He preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1998.

 

Elizabeth attended St. Mark's Lutheran Grade School in Watertown and was a 1937 graduate of Watertown High School. She was then employed at the Watertown Telephone Co. until her marriage. Elizabeth was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown where she had been a Sunday school teacher.

 

Survivors include three children, Dawn (Charles) Fiedler of Richardson, Texas, Philip (Cheryl) Hempel of St. Clair, Mich., and Mary Sue (Tom) Nouy of Tempe, Ariz.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

 

Elizabeth was the last member of her immediate family. She was further preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lillian Kleemann and Hildegard Reuschel; and a brother, Chester Kleemann.

 

A graveside service will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery, Watertown, with the Rev. Brett Brauer of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.
