06 02          60th ANNIVERSARY

Over 50,000 televisions, radios, stereos and phonographs owned by local and area residents have been repaired by Ed Stuebe, 83, of Watertown.  He is celebrating his 60th year in business this month as Watertown’s first TV repairman.  “Fixing televisions is sort of like hunting for a strange animal in a jungle,” Stuebe said while reminiscing on his years in business.  “Usually when a TV isn’t acting right seldom is it one thing, because one thing affects another.”  Stuebe began his fascination with electronics at a young age by building crystal radios, small amplifiers and phonographs.  He began his electronic repair business in Watertown in 1948 after completing his tour in Europe during World War II.  By the 1950s television sets arrived and few people in Watertown knew much about fixing them.  Stuebe said he made it his mission to learn all he could about televisions by taking them apart and putting them back together.  He also took classes at Milwaukee School of Engineering, and through RCA and General Electric.

Cross reference note:

In my family we called him "Tubey Stube" as he fixed the TV with tubes.  My mom called him to solve all sorts of problems.  He even diagnosed her back problem!
