Mecklenberg
Settlement
The Mecklenberg
Settlement was also commonly known as simply, "The Settlements" and
it is my ancestral stomping grounds. My
father's family lived there. It was
located just beyond the railroad tunnel along West Main Street. That area on the west side of the city, now
heavily built up, was known as the Settlements or the Mecklenberg
Settlement. Presumably it was known as that
because of the preponderance of emigrants from Mecklenberg,
Germany, which is odd, since most of those who lived there
hailed from Pomerania.
