Jerome H. Herreid's Funeral on Tuesday
High School teacher stricken at age of 57
Funeral services for Jerome H. Herreid, 57, Watertown High School teacher who died Sunday morning at Watertown Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness, will be conducted at Watertown Immanuel Lutheran Church at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning with the Rev. A. S. Christensen officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Herreid, who resided at 103 North Maple Street, died peacefully in his sleep.
He had been a faculty member here for 36 years and taught physics and general science. He devoted his career to teaching in Watertown and was regarded as a most competent and thorough instructor, a man who could combine the ability to teach and make classes interesting.
Herreid was born in Mr. Deerfield, Wis., Aug. 28, 1908 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Herreid. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, receiving both his bachelor’s and master’s degree from the university. He was a lifelong student and spent additional time whenever possible pursuing studies in science.
He had lived in Watertown throughout the 36 years he taught here.
He was married to the former Evelyn Holliday in 1931. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Douglas Vandre, Milwaukee, a son, David Herreid, Madison, and two grandchildren, Peter Herreid and Cara Vandre.
There are also two brothers, Henry of Two Rivers and Robert of Eau Claire. Two daughters preceded Mr. Herreid in infancy.
He was a member of the Watertown Immanuel Lutheran Church.
In his daily living he never lost sight of the importance of being congenial and friendly and meeting people half way. He was liked and respected and has left his mark on the educational system of Watertown by his devotion to the school and its students.
Friends may pay their respects at the Hafemeister Funeral Home until 9 o'clock tonight. On Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to 11 o'clock the body will be in state at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the Watertown High School and designated for the Jerome H. Herreid Memorial Foundation. Plans are to set up such a foundation to provide a scholarship or promote some other worthy educational endeavor, with a final decision still to be worked out.
